I didn't start fly fishing till I was in my late 20's but was fortunate to be living in Alaska. I cut my teeth on rainbows, steelhead, silvers and pinks. No place was ever better in my opinion.

That said, for a day of grab your socks fun with a fly rod, I love dolphin. They are such and acrobatic fish and tasty too boot.

What is your favorite fun fish on a fly?

Trout in a spring creek - love the challenge. Fishing for spring creek trout is 3D chess, everything else is just checkers.

I absolutely love the visuals I get from the tiger musky fishery close-by. This fishery has extremely clear water, so you can often see them coming from a ways away, yet other times, they seem to just appear out of nowhere. Then the eats, the follows, the non-eats....everything is in full view (well, most of the time). Plus, throwing my Epic Bandit and NFC IG 10wt for them just doesn't get much better.

A close second is becoming our Albacore fishery out here on the West Coast. Just an easily accessible 20-30lb fish that's all muscle and pulls fast and hard is just too cool. Being able to target them with my 12wt glass rods is super cool too....talk about fish tamers!

I enjoy fish from 6-8" "blue line" cutthroat and brook trout to large redfish here in LA. My favorite species however is bonefish taken while wading. Once spotted the fish are often stalked, the take is usually seen and their speed and strength is just amazing.

alligator gar - sight fishing - they shoot 10' to grab your cats whisker; hard to hook, but their aerials put all other fish to shame.

I get a rush out of big fish that run fast and jump high, like any fisherman, but my #1 has always been native brookies in high elevations on a ilttle glass rod. They don't come any prettier, in my book.

Freshwater- Love them all but especially smallies followed by largies. I also have a quiet love affair with bluegills and crappie.
Salt- around here the striper is king but I love bluefish even more. IMO nothing fights harder.
Followed by the poor man's tarpon, Hickory shad.

Just asked. I'd read you mention salmon before and I'm guessing there ain't many of them in the Hill country

I mainly fish for trout with the flyrod, but have to agree with Steve on bluegills. Spent my childhood catching them with a 7wt on foam spiders and it's hard to beat.

All fish are fun, and beautiful. But, for the ultimate thrill, the bonefish.

Big wild trout on dries 14 or bigger.

Atlantic Salmon or Steelhead on swung flies.

Haven't caught many saltwater fish except bonefish and they are a lot of fun.

Tarpon. The only fish I’ve ever hooked that put fear into me.

This and blue gill, or more specifically red ear. Eager eaters and strong fish for their size.
