I brought my little 6’6” phillipson rod down to the local harbor for some mini species fishing. All fish took a little white streamer that I make like a sabiki fly.

Mackerel fight very hard for their size, and some fun strays were around as well. The phillipson easily cast 50 ft.

As a guy that lives about as far from salt water as you can get, I am always jealous and somewhat intimidated by salt water fly fishing but that looks awesome!

Two places I've clobbered horse mackerel and horse-eye jacks (blue runners, etc.) on the Texas coast are under the isabella causeway and at platforms in Aransas bay.
In both places you're hoping for schoolie speckled trout to show up, maybe snook, but there are plenty of small pelagic fish to keep you busy.

Could have clobbered my dad one day. Tied to an Aransas Bay platform since before first light, saw the sounder go solid black mid-column, stood up with the slime line and caught my first spec, thinking I'm on my way to a bag limit. Next thing I know, the boat motor is running. My nephew hooked the platform, and starting the motor was the only thing my dad could think to get the boat over to recover it...

I love doing the same type of fishing off the beaches of Hawaii. I use a my 4wt butter stick with Martin click and pawl to target mainly small jacks and cudas.

Micro fishing-great way to waste an hour. Small jacks pull surprisingly hard
