I’ve been kept out of the mountains for the last couple of months by school, work, weddings, travel, and massive fires burning through some of my favorite watersheds. Summer is over here for now - the Sierra passes got a dusting of snow, the fires have calmed down (for now), the national forests are open again, and I got a bit of a break, so I headed up to the mountains to see if I could scare up a trout or two.
Temps in the 40s, cloudy skies, and the odd sprinkle definitely gave the day a fall feeling. The water was pretty low - California is definitely in a drought. I did manage to bring a few Sierra jewels to hand. I’m finding that the 4wt LL Bean Pocket Water Glass I got this spring makes a nice small-water prospecting rod. It handles little dries, big Chernobyl ants, and small streamers equally well with overhead and roll casts.
It sure was nice to get back out. With a little luck it won’t be the last time in 2021. Pics follow…
