Hi Guys!
I had a great day floating Atlanta's favorite tailwater with my girlfriend and her family the other day. The fishing had been slow, with only one rainbow between us all in the first few hours. that all changed when I hooked what I assumed was my 50th underwater snag of the day (streamers, sinking lines, lots of lost flies). As it turns out, it was my personal biggest brown and largest ever trout. Even on 12lb test terminal tippet and with the FF85-5, it took about 1.5-2 minutes to coax him into the net. My girlfriend got the whole thing on camera.

As a small creek angler, hooking into an 8" fish normally makes my day so this really was a mind blower for me! I had felt a little silly floating a river known for 12" stocked rainbows and the occasional 16" brown with an 8 weight, but I was sure glad that I had it when this guy hit.

Nice brown! For the members outside of GA, important to note that all the browns in the tailwater are wild, stream-born fish. As a streamer fisherman, I’d say it’s silly not to have a 7 or 8 wt in the boat when floating that river.

I’d also say that most of the people who claim to catch fish like that all the time are dishonest.

Thanks everyone! It was a load of fun, and a welcome change from my normal routine (which I enjoy dearly).

Duderino - Dont worry, this rod will be along most any time I go to a river big enough to cast it in, especially if sinking lines or big fish could be involved. also, thanks for pointing out some of the history/biology on that river.

Great story! Best part though is that look on your face in the second photo … that is why we all fish, times like those where you are like “did I really catch this?” I had the same look yesterday when I hooked into a 2.5 lb bass in a little Fl pond behind a supermarket. Up until that point I’ve been catching little dinks less than a pound. Something about a fly rod and landing a “big” fish ….

Couldnt agree more. Im happy to catch smaller trout or average bass, and grateful that I get to do both of those things pretty often. the occasional whopper can be a real eye opening experience.
