Ff807 Trout

Was out antelope hunting this morning but they weren’t interested in my decoy so decided to try a couple casts. The 807 did great, but the new line didn’t seem to work well. It’s a 406 dt 7 and seemed like it was a little heavy and had a hard time getting through the guides. Would a wf be better for this rod?
Thanks!
Paul

Nice way to break up the slow morning! Looks like you have dinner! Can’t believe its already that special time of year. I just acquired an 807 too. Havent fished it yet but cast an 8wt WF line on it and decided im going to need a 7wt instead. One of these days i need to cash in my 15-16 wyoming antelope points.

I guess that might be a better match for your fishing, but I find my FF807 to be pretty line versatile. I mostly use a DT7 (different, forgotten brand than 406), a bass WF6, and a Magnum WF8. And that’s the order in which I think the lines best meet my fishing needs.
Although it looks like you were able to get pretty good performance out of the DT7.

I no longer have a 807 but I felt it was at it's best with a 8wt. WF or DT let's not get into that again. Find a line that casts good for you.
If the line won't shoot through the guides, it's often because the line outside the tip can't pull the rest through...cause it's too light.

I like rods that load and shoot.

Nice bow!

In my mind, a line that's too heavy seems to almost violently yank the line out through the guides, so I'm curious as to your situation.

Anyway, I love my FF807 and fish it with a WF7 (which may actually weigh more than the AAFTA standard). Fiberglass rods are so flexible (yuk yuk yuk!) with line weights that I generally experiment with different line weights and styles until I find what I prefer. And what I prefer may or may not be what the majority of other folks using that same rod might prefer...

I went and tried it out again and what I think I’m feeling is the line rubbing in the guides, almost like the line is too “fat” to fit through. The rod is loading fine but shoots very little and stops very quickly.
Where I fish 50’ to 60’ casts are needed to get out past the sunfish and it was taking multiple false casts to get out that far. My beloved but now sadly finally worn out old hook and hackle wf7 had no problem getting into the backing and turning over a weighted size 10 wooly bigger on 3-4 false casts with this rod. I guess I should have stuck with something closer to what I knew worked.
Oh well.

For shooting line, yeah you probably want a WF. I like the DT7 on that rod for mending in rivers.

I like my FF807 better with an 8wt line, but it's not a rod I use often.

Good idea, I’ll have to try the dt in the spring for walleyes. Assuming the reservoir fills up a bit.

It took me 3 months to figure out the right line for my 807. I can cast almost the whole line now on a calm day (happens a few times a year here).

It is my favorite rod, though the warmup period was quite long!

So, Running Ape, that begs the question, what line did you finally chose?
