I enjoyed fishing for Yamame/Amago and Gogi with my friends this Saturday.
Originally, we were planning to enjoy fishing and camping from Saturday to Sunday, but a typhoon was approaching Hiroshima, forcing us to switch our plans to day fishing.

Unfortunately the stream was low in water, because it hadn't rained in Hiroshima for the last two weeks.
However, it made it easier to get over pools where we had to swim upstream to fish.

Fish were nervous and I caught only three, one Chub, one Yamame, and one Gogi...

Trout fishing is permitted in Hiroshima until August 31st so there are few days left.
This season, I haven't caught fish over 12 inches, which Japanese trout fishermen call "Shaku-Gami" and respect.
I will do my best.

Great outing and trip report ! Hope you stay safe during the storm !!

Who is the net maker of the landing net (I believe with a birds eye maple handle) which is protecting the beautiful Yamame?

Thanks for your comment.

The storm passed without causing any significant damage.

The net was created by Toshiyuki Makekawa, one of the best bamboo rod makers in Japan and he lives in Hiroshima.
The handle of the net is made with a Chinese quince but not with a birds eye maple.
Very cool net.

Yes, the fish was just an absolute Tank. Unfortunately, it was caught by a friend ;)

Yeaowza! Outstanding! Now that's trout fishing! I would love to fish those waters. And, yes, those are a couple of wonderful nets.

It appears to me that the trout and char in Japan are a delicate fishery, a precious resource that deserves being well protected by both fishermen and government entities. North America has organizations like Trout Unlimited, and states have specific departments for fish and wildlife conservation. Is the same true in Japan?

Sadly, the amount of salmon and trout resources in Japan is not as well managed as in North America.
Regarding Chum salmon, which is related to fishing in the open ocean, the government and fisheries cooperatives are making efforts to properly manage it.
However, I think that the amount of resources of land-locked spices such as Yamame, Amago, and Char is completely uncontrolled.
Certainly, the fishery cooperatives that manage each river carry out planned release activities, but they are not based on academic research.
In addition, some anglers release fish ignoring the species and strains in which they originally live.
I think it's a very disappointing and dangerous situation.

I can inform Mr. Maekawa, the creator of this net, that there is a request to order the net from a foreign country. If he is unfamiliar with foreign orders, I will mediate you with him.

You can check the detailed information of his nets via the following URL (information is available only in Japanese unfortunately)

Takeru-san,

Thank You So Much for your additional photos of the beautiful nets and the very skilled maker's contact information. I understand that many Japanese net crafters use "silk" for their net bags which is much softer (and significantly less harmful to the fish) than other materials used by most other global net makers. I will study the information you have provided.

Good Luck in your Shaku pursuits through the end of August :)

Thanks much for sharing. One of the best aspects of this community is the opportunity for many of us to see trip reports from places we wouldn’t otherwise know existed. The fish also. I live on the other side of the Pacific Rim from Japan. The Yamame look so familiar - and also so exotic. Thanks again!
