Picked up this awesome Phillipson “Royal” Bass rod Combo From member ericdimarzio and woodcraft

It’s a Model # RF86BE ( B-for Bass , E-for extension)

8.5ft GBF-GAF/ 8wt with removable fighting butt

Eric made it a combo for me by hooking it up with a Diawa 254 reel spooled up with Some 406 Fly line in WF8 and fresh backing (Thanks Eric..)

Decided to test it out at the watering hole down by work.

I went with the Orvis 12lb leader and a large kiwi muddler fished top water like a frog by the water Lilies.
Those kiwi muddlers are so dense with deer hair it takes like 50 casts to get em really wet.
So you can fish them Top-Water for a good bit before they will sink

Well I got about 10 casts in before a Northern Snakehed Blew me up !!
Chopped that Orvis 12lb leader like it was a 7x..

My Bass Angler friend Luke ,says he’s gonna keep an eye for my Kiwi muddler. LoL
It’s In the mouth of this guys Buddy!

Needless to say the toothy critter leader is going in the regular rotation.
Tight lines till next time .

Those snakehead are freaky fish. Have you seen the videos of Paul Arden aka “Sexyloops” catching huge ones in Malaysia? Apparently they have invaded the Potomac River in DC area!

Nice looking rod, and crazy looking fish !

I grew up mostly in the DC area, NoVa. Only fishing I did was with my dad as a kid, catching sunfish on worms at a reservoir near our neighborhood.

I know they have teeth but I didn't realize the would cut through 12lb so easily. So what do you plan on using for bite tippet? wire?

Eric is a great guy, And that rod is fantastic.

Were you fishing Mattawoman Creek? And were you fishing from a boat? I have a friend that wants to bring his boat down from NW pa to fish for Snakehead and bass this summer.

Mudfish,Bloodhound and Odanata many thanks for the love ..

Dave S
these snakeheads are thriving from the Potomac all the way up the bay to the Susquehanna..and beyond
We had record rains in 2018
the snakeheads rode the freshwater currents all over the Bay..
There everywhere now..

Carlz
I will disclaim that the 12lb Orvis Fluoro leader was in a pack that’s been in my leader wallet for a few seasons. Not to mention that snakehead was In Best mode hooked deep (He just swallowed the whole fly)
LoL.
I’m going to use the rio toothy critter leader for subsurface , and for top water use one of those tippet clips tied to a fresh Bass leader , I’ve talked to a few guys I know who use the clips with pretty good success on fish hooked shallow so when they chew and thrash the fly into the ground/bottom it’s biting at the clip a bit.
Now a fish hooked deep you just pray the leader gets between two teeth and not bitten.

I’m fishing from Shore on a lil lake that feeds an unnamed creek thats a tributary of the Bush River.
It’s up by my work in Aberdeen Md .
Cool lil fishery lake and creek are divided by a lil road which it goes under and dumps into
The creek. Lots of Panfish,Bass and well now snakeheads too.
The snakeheads and other fish get into the lake on storm tides that swell the creek so the fish can swim right upstream thru the drain pipe.
It’s like 10 mins from my house and like 2 from work. I’ve fished it for 20 years or so ..
Highly pressured but I do ok since I’m Not throwing frogs, seknkos and whopper ploppers all day like the Bass Guys.
I work a more finesse approach to the lake. But I will pound with tidal creek side with big clousers and mop fly-Worms .
Gonna have to up my game now the snakeheads are so firmly entrenched..

Shameless plug/Shout out to member Eric Dimarzio for hooking me up this rod.

I’ve been wanting a Tru Bass rod.
This is as Bassy as it gets..

Hellmtflies,. That's a snakehead.

I wasn't expecting them to be established that far up the bay.

We get them in the tidal Potomac.

I was living in MD, Bowie/Crofton, in the early/mid 2000's. The DC sniper was the big news and shootings happened very close to my home. The other big news, if I remember correctly, was that a snake head, the first reported, was caught in a nearby pond in Crofton. The beginning to what is now. It is sad to hear they have spread into the environment that much.
