It is very windy here this morning (15-20 mph plus) so I got out my old Eagle Claw Featherweight 8’ six weight. I have a DT7 line on it. Caught 15 Bluegill and a couple of bass in an hour on a bully spider. I haven’t fished that rod in probably at least seven years. Not going to throw away my Steffens but that Featherweight is a great rod for the money.

They are a great backup rod. I’ve caught plenty of trout and bass with mine, along with some striped bass on 6’6”.

What fun. I have an old 7wt Wright & McGill Eagle Claw Sweetheart 8’6” 2pc I scored on eBay last year that is begging to be fished. Thanks for the reminder.

I have that exact rod. I stripped it and wound on some single foots. With a 7WF it makes a nice steelhead rod for the close quarters around here. Good stuff.

I fished my 6’6 eagle claw all morning(no luck though) and have a 7’ that is waiting for me to pick out a reel for it, and hopefully I’ll have an 8’ on the way in a week or so. I’m a big fan of these inexpensive little rods.

Thanks
Sam from KY

I love these rods! I have the featherlight 6’6 and 8’ and the 7’6 EC Crafted Glass arrives today!!!!!! Can’t wait to throw a 406 DT line on it and a Pflueger Medalist. Don’t get me wrong I love my Red Truck glass rod but save that for the trout out West. These Eagle Claws are great for pond fishing here in Florida and can take a beating. I have discovered fly fishing for Bass and my 8 ft with a bass fly line from SA and a Pflueger automatic probably makes the purists reel back in horror but it is so fun and perfect for getting muddy and dirty in these ponds and lakes and when floating or in a kayak I can pull ole bucket mouth out of the weeds and trees.

Are you talking about the Featherlight or did Eagle Claw also make a "Featherweight"? (I frequently catch myself referring to my Featherlights as Featherweights.)

I have the three rods in the current Featherlight series and always have two in the back of my car, at the ready.

Sorry meant “featherlight” …. Had a great weekend on the water this weekend and have fallen even more in love …. I think the new Crafted Glass is going to be my backup rod when I hit Utah in April.

I just bought another one,a 5/6 but an older 90s? version.10 dollars at my local bait shop. It has the orangeish metal reel seat and is a little lighter than the current ones. The guy who runs the place is a vintage tackle junkie and sets stuff aside for me.We kind of buy and trade stuff at what we payed and i have

Cyguy, let me know how it goes with the EC Crafted Glass rod. I have that rod (7 1/2 foot 3wt) and i find it heavy to fish. I kind of like the action on it and it really is a nifty looking rod. What line and reel have you matched it with?

Hi GG,

Well for my Crafted Glass I ended up using a Cortand 444 Peach DT4 paired with a RC 1594 Medalist. I’ll get a 406 DT WT4 on it soon.

I’ve got an 8’6 Eagle Claw Sweetheart arriving soon with SW 300 printed on it. Any idea what year these were made?

My first fly rod in the late 80’s was a 6’6” Featherlight with that orangey metal hardware. It’s labeled a 5wt but I’m sure it would handle a 6 line just as well. It still hangs on the wall in my garage and I take it out from time to time. Super fun little rod!

Ok got it in the mail and it is mint condition … Will post pictures tonight. Says it is a Sweetheart SW-300 6-7 line …. I’ll try a 7 DT and hope that works.

Fairly new to fly fishing but I have been fishing a 6-6 3/4wt Featherlight with a WF4 (pretty sure an SA Mastery Standard) on a Pflueger Medalist and love it. I have caught tons of panfish and small bass on it as well as trout out in CO this summer. Also great to know it won't break the bank to replace it if I damage it stomping up and down small brushy creeks here in TX.

Do you find that you can perform “normal casts” in tight locations where graphite rods - even short ones - favor a roll cast?

I do not have enough experience with other rods to say for sure, but I like its shorter length specifically for the small, brushy creeks I’ve been fishing with it.
