I’ve been targeting Ghosts “on the fly” for the past 3 seasons now.
Took most of that first season figuring out just the right waters that hold big aggressive Carp

Check..
Next up was to work out some Patterns for the the streams and tidal estuary areas i fish.

Check ,Check

Now when it comes to what makes a good carp rod for me its Two things..
1-It must be able to throw your fly accuratly with one Single hauled back cast (your only gonna get one or two casts at a carp before it spooks)
2- More importantly it has to have the capability to max out and tame the ghost without destroying itself.

While this area is quite subjective..
you could a lot worse than a Fenwick for carp rod

My favorite “ultralight carp rig” is my
Fenwick FL-6

A 7’8” 6wt rod with crisp and controlled action with tons of backbone
Teton/Tioga #4 disc drag reel
Throwing Scientific Anglers GPX WF5f
1x to 4x Fluorocarbon leader depending on fly and fish.

Now that you’ve found the Carp Honey Hole , found the key pattern,,Made the perfect cast

Wait ..
And wait .
And then wait a little more before you even think of moving that fly.
Carp are the most “line sensitive” quarry I’ve ever fished for .
And maybe just maybe if you say a lil prayer to the fish gods.
You get a take.
You best be ready to hang on for the ride...
Try and limit that first run they want to make .
Put the brakes on em by getting them to turn in a semi circle. Keep the rod side to side not high in the air..
Try to steer em into making circular runs In stead of straight runs.
Be prepared for lots of thrashing, twisting, rolling, sounding to the bottom For rip-rap, rocks/boulders trying to break you off (This is Usually where the carp fishing experience goes Sideways)
Susquehanna strain carp Do-Not tire easily and can be quite a challenge getting into a net solo.
I only fell into the creek on my left side try to land this double digit one lol :lol

With the proper preparation ,presentation and patience the mysteries of The Golden Ghost will unlock themselves.

Go Get those Ghosts..

A 7 or 8 weight Fenwick would be fun, too. After coming up with a Brood-X Heddon rebuild design, maybe a yellow Fenwick carp-themed rod is the next challenge.

Dude...Well Done! That Fenwick and a FF756 should both excel at the task.

Carp fishing is a mystery to me -- congratulations on unlocking some of its secrets ! Around here it is far too "urban" an endeavor for me to want to partake in, but the shots you posted look tranquil and quiet.

Wonderful advice and photos. Carp are plentiful in Texas, in both urban and wilder settings. I’ve never caught one but several of my fishing pals have landed big ones on 3-4wts. I can’t imagine…except I’ve witnessed one that was amazing on the Paluxy River..

Thank you all for the positive responses.

I’m out here still chasing Ghosts but all the streams and rivers have lots of folks tubing
and the smallmouth have been relentless chasing them out of the pools.
This guy is looking for his friends

Whirlpool
Here are a few Carp Contenders to ponder

Heddon “Superba” 7.5Ft 7/8wt
Wright and McGill Denco Super2 8ft 7wt
Berkeley Buccaneer 8.5ft 8wt

Here’s the reel seat I’m thinking of using for the “Golden Ghost Special”
soon as I find me a yellow Fenwick 8.5ft

I wonder if Carlz Still has his yellow Fenwick he had in the classifieds last month.
Hmm??
Got me thinkin for sure now....

Ive hooked a lot of carp while fishing for trout in a medium sized stream. The stream is not big but some of the carp are huge.If Ive learned one thing, a 5 weight rod just wont cut it.I havent used it much but I think my Cabelas CGR 7-8 wt. might be perfect for this type of fishing.

I've only caught 4 or 5 over the last 10 years, but I really need to spend more time trying; a hooked carp is really a hoot.

A good reel is important too, they make long runs after seeming kind of docile at first,I have lost many battles with the carp and almost a couple not cheap flylines.A click pawl aint gonna cut it on even a mid sized carp. The private water i fish for them encourages, even forbids their release but that isn't me.I get them to the bank and break them off if someone is watching.

Awesome Post!!! Thanks for the detailed info! I need to start targeting these. I recently picked up an unused W&M Denco 2 9ft 9wt which was the exact same rod i purchased as my second flyrod of my youth and as I remember a much nicer rod than my first, both of which regretfully i gave away and replaced with graphite. I see you also have one of those. Ive caught < 10 carp in my life on flys but your post has given me a little inspiration.

The golden bonefish takes skill in both stalking and bringing to hand. A fantastic fish IMO, although smallmouths are a fun one too.

Whether at a city park, quiet stream, muddy river, or lake shoreline, they are a respectful quarry.

Great job on the catch. Remember seeing an Ohio fella consistently catch golden bonefish on 3wts in good time. They are a hoot.

I scrounged up a photo from a few years ago. Caught it on a chironomid. Put up a great fight for sure. Wasn’t on purpose though.
Ive done ok when i was a teenager in the early 80s using an egg fly on the old bluegill spawning beds where carp would frequent and sight fish for them.

here's my 8.5ft yellow Fenwick 7wt, goes great with carp ;-)

the nice thing about the 7wts, is they are unfashionable, so much cheaper than the 5 or 6wts.
