Got to make my first trip out for the year last weekend and went to a local lake. The water level in the lake was down quite a bit and no water was going down the spillway. This was the first time I tried the rod since buying it over a year ago and put on a SA System 1 678 with an old Ultra 3 7wt line. The reel was too light for the rod, but it did ok and the rod cast the 7wt line well. Caught a handful of bass on an olive wooly bugger.

Big fan of that rod; light and capable. Is your 7wt line true to weight ? I typically use my 6wt Fenglass with a half weight heavy WF6F. I also like the 7wt Fenglass.

Nice looking bass! I like that red rod and yellow line combo, too.

Odonata ; not sure of the Ultra 3 7wt grain weight. I have an Orvis Battenkill mid-arbor III that feels better on the rod and it has two spools that have a 6wt line (not sure of what type though as it was given to me) and an Orvis Hydros 6wt bass taper that I'm going to try next. I just wanted to give the system 1 a try since it's been 20 years since I've used it.

DaveS and Del Gue: Thanks!

I contacted SA and got a response on the same day. Great customer service. He stated the old Ultra 3 WFs and DTs were standard weight.

That combo looks great. And those are some solid LMB!
Good to hear about SA still having good customer service.

Looks like a perfect trip! Thanks for sharing. The chance of losing a rod in a boat tears at my soul. I think I would just risk it anyways and deal with the consequences of buying another one.

thanks

Just olive maribou and hackle, plus the bead head. I wrap some wire underneath them usually to help sink as well. Time to start tying some more to get out next month.

Gunpowder, Glad to see you posting up .
That fenglass is so freshy fresh!!
Thats a shame the system 678 doesn’t balance .
It looks so good on the Fenny
Ive had the same problem ,
trying to balance that 678 reel on several rods I thought would be perfect to find the System reel too light ..

Those are some nice looking Bass !!
Looking forward to see more posts from out your way .

Bring that rod when you come home to visit we’ll hit “The Creek” together.
