They love the blue and black Boobie fly. They just hammer it

Looks like an awesome fun outing.

Is that Boobie fly on a jig hook? Do you fish it subsurface?

Zeppo, yes it’s tied on a jig hook. I fish it with a type 3 full sink and 2 ft. of 6 or 8 lb. Trilene XL. I let it sink to about 7-10 ft. then strip it back then let it pause. When it pauses the fly floats up and the bass crush it. The eyes are foam, I am going to tie up some smaller boobies for bluegill. The fly is great because it rarely hangs up in the rocks or weeds.

The dubbing is Arizona simi seal or Diamond dub in black/ blue, black/ red and bloody leech. As of late back/ blue has been killing it

Those are some really nice healthy looking fish. I'll have to try tying some flies like this.

Dumb question about the jig hook: normally one ties in dumbbell eyes above the shank, so that the fly will ride point side up, because of the force of gravity on the weight. With the booby eyes, wouldn't the buoyancy of the foam cause it to ride point side down ? Again, dumb question ... maybe I shouldn't overthink it.

Yes, so the eyes tied on the top the point rides down. It’s a UK Stillwater fly and that is how it’s tied. But I see your point and it’s a most intriguing observation. I will tie a few with the eyes under the shank so it rides point up.

Nothing like a session hammering the hungry green trout! Dig that new TFM hat. My pre-order won me an Orvis SFG 8wt paired with a Hydros reel and SA bass line in Cameron’s drawing. Happy day. More on that later!

My guess would be that the bass are taking the fly thinking it is a dragonfly nymph. You have to love Simi Seal.I think I have all the colours except blue and black.

I got myself some of that blue-black simi-seal and that is one of the best colours yet.

Cool, I’m going trout fishing in a few weeks and are tying some blue/ black balance buggers and am anxious to try them on my favorite Stillwaters in the Eastern Sierra.
