That’s a Real nice looking rod and some beautiful bows ..
What size Orvis Battenkill reel are you using?
Hows the swing weight and cast ability of your rod?
Love to see more pics in action

Thanks for your response!

It was my first time fishing the rod, so my reel and line setups were just hunches and I'll surely do more experimenting. Anyone out there with suggestions? The reel is a Battenkill Disc (new version) IV, advertised for line weights 7-9. I once owned the Disc Ill, which is advertised for 5-7 wt. lines, but I fished it mostly with 4 and 5 lines. IMO, this line of reels seems a bit undersized for their line ratings. The Disc IV weighs 5.9 oz. according to Orvis specs. With that reel, the rod seemed light and well balanced; my (tired, old) arm withstood a long day of lots of casting. The fish were rising; I'm an addict.

I often use a 6 wt on my Disc IV, on long graphite (McFarland Tailwind, Scott Powr-ply). For this rod, I spooled up a DT5F by 406 Fly Lines, which seemed to work very well.

My rod impressions were very positive. I started tossing a long leader (at least 14') in swirling winds that day, so I'll admit to a few tangles and wind knots. I shortened my leader a bit, and that helped. I've noticed that fishing glass requires being a better caster. Good form rewards. Sloppy sends me to the penalty box.

I also noticed the difference playing fish on glass. IMO, this is a much-discussed topic because it is true. It just seems like the trip to the net is less harsh for the fish.

Lastly, this rod is beautiful. A guy along the river asked me if I "was fishing with a butter stick...?" I paused and answered, "Well, yes... but it's not a Redington. Mine was built by Bill Hickey at W. Jude Rod Co."

I've purchased two rods from Bill, and both have been exceptional.

All the best,

Larry

Thanks for the pics. Nice fish and rod. Bill does great rod work indeed - really knows his stuff and is a helpful guy.
I like the looks of that grip, sort of a slight tapered torpedo style (or modified cigar style) I would like to try that style one day.

Here are a couple of pictures of the reel seat on Larry's McFarland Yellow Glass 805-3. The Skeleton is a Lemke LC-7 Retro paired up with a Cocobolo Insert that I turned.

Put it to the test again tonight. IMO, glass has superior fish-fighting abilities!
