Spent the day on the South Platte at Waterton Canyon with my Orvis SFG 764.

The water is pressured given how close it is to the Denver suburbs, but the natural beauty and chance to see wildlife up close is hard to beat!

While spring is just getting started, the mule deer are actively foraging and starting to lose their winter coats.

The fishing was slow, and the trout were especially spooky with flows still at their pre-runoff lows. Surprisingly, though, I managed to catch a large brown on a hopper pattern.

He put up quite the fight, thrashing and leaping before running right toward me. Upon release, he made his displeasure known by splashing me in the face! :lol

I’m always amazed at how feisty the fish are in this stretch of the Platte. Even though I was below the Strontia Springs dam from the holy of holies (Deckers), the trout here run fast and strong.

Having caught the king of the pool, I packed it in early and headed home.

Congrats...I was there 2 weekends ago and there were so many people I was afraid of hooking something other than a fish. I am glad you found a quiet spot to get on the water. Nice pics and nice fish!

that's a terrific brown for Waterton.. nice !

I like to bicycle up there after work on weekdays, the fishing crowds are minimal then.. weekends are like any other river in CO, fishermen lining the banks.. weekends are for carp fishing ;-)

Nice brown! I often bike further up, where there are places not so close to the road and a greater chance of seeing bighorns.

Wow
Look at all the spots on that brownie.
So beautiful..
What reel are you using on the Orvis rod ?
Is it a Ross?
Ive been mulling on pulling the trigger on an SFG.
I’m kids torn between the SFG or a Thomas and Thomas Lotic glass rod.
