Most of my home waters won't be fishable for a couple of months yet, so last week I took the van down to NM to link up with Aurelio and we spent a couple of days fishing together. Good times! If you have never eaten his cooking...you are missing out!

The first day we hiked a looong way down into the canyon near where the Rio Grande and Red Rivers meet.

Although things did not start happening until it warmed up a bit, there were midges, mayflies and caddis coming off the stream. Pretty water as you can see.

There were numerous browns and rainbows about this size and we caught them on caddis on top and underneath.

The hike out was another looong one. But it was a great day.

The next day we paid a rod fee and were able to access some private water.

Flow was a little skinny and the fish were pretty selective for tiny black midges but they were coming up to take them. There are beautiful, healthy, fat rainbows in this water. Worth the rod fee. We landed several nice rainbows, had to figure them out, but it was great fun.

After the midge hatch tapered off, Aurelio hooked the biggest fish of the day on a Chernobyl, but it threw the hook. We each lost very large trout who knew how to end the engagement in their favor.

Amazing high desert canyon scenery and the water looks great for early spring. Nice to see those beauties in the nets. Bravo!

Beautiful country and fish. This is a great antidote to the long thaw I'm still enduring up north.
