Lookin' real hard at an Orvis Superfine Glass 6 wt,, regularly $429, reelflyrod.com is having a flash sale, 20% off any one item using code FLASH20, which brings it down to $343.20.

It's pretty hard to resist at that price.

I have one and like it. For me it works about as well with a 7 wt. as it does a 6 wt. line and I use both on mine, the 7 wt. for windy days and closer fish.

Also have the 6wt and love it. I can cast further and more accurately with it than using my Sage 6wt XP.

Awright.

It's ordered. :)

Although I may still order one of Dusty's rods come my birthday on July 1st.

I reckon I will, buddy!

Gotta have a backup, don'tcha know, although the Orvis will prolly play backup to the *********! ;)

I have seen you speak glowingly of your *********'s, and I completely trust your judgement and evaluation in such things. I picked up a 5 wt this year, and I'll order a 6 come July. Once I have a 5 and a 6, I expect I'll be in tall cotton and well equipped for Montana adventures, along with my Barclay!

The Orvis 6wt Superfine glass IMHO is the best rod out of that series, it matches up real nice with the Orvis Banshot line for bass fishing I've also used it on flats for specs and reds. But I have way too many flyrods to use it all the time

I really enjoy fishing mine. It is a very versatile rod and a joy to cast. I use the Orvis Pro Trout line in a 6 weight and fish for bass, panfish and trout - a great line for the rod. A reel of about 5 ounces balances it quite well. This rod is a favorite - hard to beat.

Did you pull the trigger and get the SFG 6wt? If so how do you like it?

My Airedale got it for me for Christmas!!! Good dog!

I haven't had a chance to get it out yet to try it out. Will report back when I do.

As with much of the USA, it got colder the Arctic here in Texas this week, but as the sub freezing temps descended I got out for some fishing last week. I was dying to at least test cast my gorgeous Orvis SFG 6wt (holiday purchase from a forum member) but didn’t think there would be any fish to target. Last Tuesday lunch, I rigged it up with a big terrestrial just could have something to track on longer casts and headed to my favorite Dallas suburban park pond to get the line wet. Temps were in the low 30s. I put on the LL Bean GQS 6/7 (another lovely forum member purchase) spooled up with basic SA AirCel L6F--the only 6 line I had on hand. I started casting towards the center fountain to get the line out, then pulling out line and double hauling to get my line speed up. I love how this rod casts. Very nice flex that you can feel work as it loads, making it accurate yet you can really send it. It also has a soft touch. Got it out about 70-80 feet with straight shots and light landing on the water. Then I turned 90 degrees and started throwing the fly up the little channel that feeds the pond, aiming for stuff in the corners where I have caught about a million little panfish over the years. Sure enough I saw them swarming on my strips as I brought the fly back to me. Second cast I got a hit and the bug disappeared under the surface. Set my hook and brought this guy in after some feisty tugs. I brought in a few more after that, once I saw they were hitting. Obviously smaller fish than what this rod is designed for, but they put a nice bend in this sweet glass, too!

Thanks for sharing and glad you've been surviving the harsh weather! I also recently acquired a second hand Orvis SFG 866 and have enjoyed lawn casting the rod. I can't wait to fish it. I think it's going to be a great trout streamer stick. It's a solid rod, a bit burlier than I expected based my experience with the Orvis SFG 764, but I agree that it's powerful with nice touch.

Yes, I am eager to go after bigger fish with it. I think it will be killer with streamers for trout and bass, and from the Kayak, especially on the Mississippi gulf coast. Beefier than I thought, too, but light in the hand; I can definitely see it casting a 7wt line like a dream. Excited to hear your fish stories. Forgot to include pics of the LL Bean GQS 6/7;(aka Hardy Marquis Disc) reel on it:

I too really enjoy fishing my SFG 6 wt. really fun rod on bass, panfish and trout. It’s one of my most used rods for lake fishing. It handles indicator rigs with multiple flies, intermediate and full sink lines with ease. I have landed numerous large trout and bluegill with it and it was a blast. Here it is with a hog bluegill and trout

Nice pics and story showing the rod in action. I really like the way bigger glass rods are still fun with smaller fish on the line. The GQS looks great too. I really like the way my 6/7 Guide (same size I think but with click-pawl drag) balances my bigger glass rod. Thanks for sharing....

The new to me 866 with an Abel Super 6 purchased from a forum member. I like the combo. Balances well for my taste.

I'm waiting very patiently (?) for my 7'6" 4wt SFG to ship next week. My first upgrade from a starter kit so I'm stoked. Cheers.

Hey, I was also searching for a SFG 8’ 5 wt. Never did but A Hardy Sirius 8’ 5/6 wt from flea bay is now residing with me! It will be two months before trout season opens. Ultimately I would be able to compare the Sirius in a side by side comp. but will have to depend on the forum to tell me the finer points of the two and their differences. Not certain which is prettier!

Hello as a new member from UK, new to glass and pretty new to flyfishing in the last year (after about 25 years off!!)
I've just picked up an unused Superfine 6wt and would be keen to here folks recommendations for reel and line. I'll be mainly fishing small still waters with nymph and dries for 2-3lb trout and rivers for UK perch and chub, although hope to travel soon. I was thinking of a Battenkill as I like the idea of click and pawl but open to suggestions. Thanks in advance

Welcome Kav 1! The Battenkill is a very light reel, too light for that rod in my opinion.
