As winter approaches I always think about a couple hard to reach streams I won't get to again until the spring. Course the pandemic has made things worse. Here are some photos of a tiny favorite cutthroat stream east of Santa Fe.

What a unique looking little trout stream with the rock wall pool!
I love the shots of the trout free swimming. Great pictures!

The cutts look like greenback variety. Do you know what strain they are?

They are a Rio grande cutt for sure but since it was near Santa Fe it is probably the pecos strain.........Aurelio
There is a very tiny stream near me that has the Canadian strain

Nice. That’s certainly a stream you’d want to hit before it gets weathered in.

Those hard to reach (or otherwise obscure) streams are some of the best. Thanks for sharing!

I can't say for sure what they are but suspect Aurelio knows. The stream has been a fun one for me because it usually takes 2 hours to drive to ( 3 hours if I bike) from campground and then between 1.5 to 2 hours to hike to depending on which canyon I take. Then fish and explore. Drought and winter have sometimes limited fishing area. Still more to explore. Next Spring.

This is really cool, and I'm glad you got out to find some lovely fish.

It reminds me a lot of another stream in the Santa Fe area (much better known, though I'll not name it here) when in the area for a conference. I have thought often of going back and spending more time in northern New Mexico. Beautiful country.

Every trip here is an adventure. Once, on the hike back, a hail storm covered the mountain with ice. Here are a few more pics when the water was low.

Beautiful cutthroat! The more difficult treks always feel so much more rewarding.

The large spots definitely make it appear to be a Pecos strain RGC. I have had a remote stream north of Santa Fe (with large spot, Pecos strain RGC) on my bucket list for several years. I just need to get back to New Mexico some time...too much water, not enough time.

Good luck next spring!

Chris

Very different from our trout streams in Japan. Very attractive.
