I don't doubt it Hobey! I've seen some real monster browns around here too. I was just joking that a 7 wt might be better.

I fish 5wt for trout and have a nice Fenwick FF755 that has enough power in the butt to deal with larger fish.

Saying that I hooked into some very strong large trout on the Colorado river by my son's house this summer. Put a severe bend in the 5wt while wade fishing. I bought a FF857 and am going back for another round!

Was the CGR #4 but now split between a Fenwick 605 and the Epic 686. I use a number of rods through the year when chasing warm water species. If it’s from behind the seat, a Haldin 57 as a grab-and-go. However, if I plan accordingly, a FF605 or Epic 686. After 2 years with the rod, the 686 is my favorite rod — EVER . . . until Something “neater” shows up. :p

I have to travel to fish for trout as many others have said, so when I’m doing that, I take several rods but the Steffen 8’ 3/4 gets almost all the fishing rights. Here at home (I live on a lake) I always have my Cortland Pro-Crest 7’6” 5/6 ready to go. Sweet rod.

I'm fortunate to have some truly great rods at my disposal but by far, the rod I fish the most is my Chris Barclay 6'6" Gila Special 2wt. I fish a lot of small, blue-line streams for wild brook trout around WNC and this rod is absolutely perfect. I've owned 2 of these rods, the first of which was tragically run over by car, but I've since been gifted the original prototype Gila Special from my father. Barclay makes some beautiful rods for sure. Might as well call them magic wands.

You’re a lucky man. (Not the rod-run-over part, but the girls prototype part.) Finally got in line for a Barclay myself. Now it’s all about the waiting’...

For local waters, a steffen 8' 3/4 in the winter and spring when I usually need to toss weight. In the summer a 7'1" 4wt when all I do is dry fly.

The question is the Go To Rod
Like everyone else I have way too many glass rods for a multitude of waters I fish
But if it’s one single “Go-to” rod That would definitely have to be My Fenwick FF806
It’s got Presentation In spades and range to still throw some distance
Can be comfortably fished with 4-8 wt line
It just seems to go everywhere with me

For me it’s a W&M 8’ 7 weight. The main streams and rivers I fish for trout can and do have steelhead in them at any given time. There’s also no shortage of logs. Certainly not my most enjoyable rod but definitely the most used.

steffen 4/5 8' but in spring run off i often bring the FF806. the 806 is a very impressive all around rod, nymphs and light streamers but tosses a #20 dry fly with grace.

I fish mainly small mountain streams and creeks where trout don't grow bigger than 8-10 inches. My go-to rod is Barclay's 66 Gila Special (2wt).

My Andy Manchester built 8'6" Fisher can throw lines 5-8 with sensitivity and progressive power to make fishing pleasurable for a wide range of fishing scenarios. It happens to be my favorite rod as well.

I have the same 8'6" Fisher glass. Great rod as you say -- very versatile. It will cast No. 5,6,7,8 lines. I enjoy fishing it most with wf6 or dt7.

yes, that Fisher is a truly enjoyable rod to fish & one of my most versatile. I've never tried it with a 5wt. Maybe I should...

I fish two streams locally. One is a brook trout stream which is relatively open but has some obstacles to back cast in places. Would pick a 6 ft 3 inch 3 wt for this. Other stream is a big wide smallmouth water. Would choose a 7.5 or 8 ft rod in 6 or 7 wt for this. My compromise single rod for both waters would be my fenwick FL 84-5, a 7 ft 5 wt.

The rod I reach for most is a Fenwick FF755. It's quite at home, fishing dries, on medium trout waters. No fuss, no muss, just get on the bus!

For those describing the fisher from Andy, is that the sceptre rod or a specific fisher model, if so which?

Like several others, a Fisher 8'6" that I built about 35 years ago. Mine is the 6/7 model.

Possibly others have the favorite 8'6" model in the 6 weight blank. See the blanks and specs below.

Lots more to search here, or to study the Fisher blanks: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1043&start=25#p130436

Fisher-based rods in this length may have subtle differences based on the retailer's/builder's specs. Any of them will be great rods. The Sceptres are related but slightly different--a search here covers them well in relation to Fisher.

Fish mainly small streams here. Like to use all the rods I have so really don't have a go-to-rod. My rod choices for the day mainly fall by the season of the year.

Spring: Higher flows, mostly nymph fishing: Epic 580, Fenwick FF805, Fenwick FF75
Summer: Low and clear water, dry fly and nymphs: Orvis SFG 764, Epic 476, Steffen 8ft. 4-5 wt., Diamondglass 804, Fenwick FF75
Fall: Nymph fishing often with split shot added: Fenwick FF805, Fenwick FF806, Epic 580
