What do you like for lines on these rods?

That ********* rod is beautiful. The chestnut section looks particularly good on that green I think. I have been dying to get my hands on a ********* and have a 9' 3wt on the way.

I fish most often a small, warm-water river nearby for smallmouth, largemouth, rock bass, hybrids & whatever else I can get to bite with an 8'3" 3 wt Graywolf (the Natural) using, believe it or not, a 6 wt wf line. This rod accesses lower blank power so smoothly; I can use heavier line giving me a wider range of flies without collapsing. Fires nicely up close with that grain wt hanging off the tip, and bigger smallmouth feel like olive-colored tarpon.

Have go-to configurations for the places I fish, but no go-to rod. Picking the rod and reel combo, moving lines around as needed is always a pleasant part of the night-before staging ritual.

Floating lines are TT triangle tapers 6 and 5. McFarland recommended TTs long ago and I've never had a reason to change. Most of the time I use Teeny WF mini tips (5 ft) on these rods for soft hackles and streamers, also 6 and 5. Sometimes but not often a TT 20' clear tip.

I usually have 4 different rods in my car at any given time; a short rod, a long rod, and a couple 7.5 - 8 foot rods. This year I've used a couple dozen different rods. So, I guess I don't have a real go-to rod.

Like bulldog, I do like to select different rods. I'll fish a rod for a while then I like a change-up. I did post my favorites.

Slowly, I have been finding myself fishing 6-weights for trout more than 5s. This year, it was the ********* YS Glass 9’ 6-weight.

I like my small streams and I love my Scott F Series 724 to the point where I have sold all my other rods. However I just bought a F Series 663 so we’ll see.

For trout, my Orvis SFG 7'6" 4 wt gets the most use.

For large river steelhead, the Echo Glass Spey 12'9" 7 wt.

My favorite graphite rod is an 11' 4 wt Winston BIII TH Micro-spey. I love it for trout spey, smallmouth spey and the typically smaller GL steelhead we see on the Ohio tribs.

Well dang, if you pin me down...
I can't have one go-to, how about a go-to for different fisheries? Maybe I can narrow it down like that.

Trout: Almost always Wonderod 1290 7'-9" 6 weight (or one of it's 7' cousins)
Bass: Usually South Bend Custom 3170 8'-6" 6 weight (prob a 7 wt rod but it fishes real nice with a 6 wt), or FF80 if it wants to go for a ride.
Steelhead/Stripers: Brown glass San Fransisco Winston 8'-6" 8 weight

This summer, I fished mostly the Scott Fs6634 on smaller water. On bigger water I split time between a green Winston Stalker 4 weight and a McFarland 8' spruce creek 4 weight. Usually I'm fishing streamers with a six weight most of the summer. I did not this year.

Hard to pick a favorite, but I have that Scott F663 and I adore fishing with it.

My dad and me this fall.

I either fish with a 72-3 Barclay or a 653 F2 most of the time here in the Driftless. I ran into a few bigger fish this year where I wish I had a 4 wt so I put a deposit down on a Driftless Special a couple of weeks ago. One fish was easily over 20 inches (I would guess around 24-25) and ran me into a root wad and broke me off.

Hobey, if a 25" fish is what you are trying to put the brakes on, I think you should have put the deposit on the 777! ;)

Like Bulldog, I have preferred combinations but no preferred rod. I like almost all my rods so whim dictates what I use.

It’s not unheard of. I caught a 18’’ earlier that day and this fish dwarfed it. One of the biggest fish I have seen in our area.

Since 2016, my Orvis Superfine Glass (805-3pc) 8' 5wt has been in use the most. It's an all-round performer, sometimes casting tiny dries, nymphs or soft hackles, sometimes flinging large weighted streamers & lures. It's my go-to 5wt rod, paired with a Hardy LRH Lightweight.
New, but soon to be a contender, will be a ********* Western Glass 806 (8' 3pc. 5/6wt). This rod balances a fairly heavy (7.2 oz.) 3.25" Valentine Single Action #83 reel. Casts 5wt & 6wt lines with equal ease & has the backbone to turn a big fish to hand. Pretty too.
