Hey folks,

I‘m new to the forum and was becoming addicted to glass because of the Epic Bandit I bought. Just an adorable „fat“ rod.

For small stream I fish a Douglas Upstream 8.8 4wt which is a decent rod and pretty good, but I‘d like to try a glass for that as well. (I fish small rivers for trout with it, mostly dry, nymph without rigs, and small streamers line 10 wooly)

I was offered a Scott 475/3 black green, little older but the seller said it is a very good one, and price is great.

Before the Scott I thought about staying with Epic brand and trying the 478.

So what do you think? Could you compare them already maybe? Pros and cons?

Thank you so much in advance!

Those older Scott black rods win high praise here. I would grab it.

My black/green Scott has turned into my go-to small stream rod this year. It's a great tool, and examples are typically not cheap when they become available. Good call for sure. If nothing else, you're likely to at least get your money back if you decide to go for something else. Looks like this one?

Good choice. My Scott F754 is my go-to all around trout rod. Never cast the Epic so can't say, but I've put that Scott up against many of the finest glass rods available and I still own it. Awesome rods.

Yes, exactly that one.

Do you have a tip for the reel? How much should it weigh?

Oh boy... opinions on reel weight and balance point (under the grip, ahead of the grip, etc.) vary a lot. My CFO (shown in the pic) weighs 4 1/4 ounces loaded with line. It feels good to me. I grabbed a Hardy Featherweight from my reel bag it weighs about the same.

If you want a new reel for not too much $$$, I’ve actually been pretty happy with LLBean Hardy clones - they are well made and not too expensive.

There are a ton of choices out there, tho. Good luck!

I have never cast that Epic, but I absolutely love my Scott F754/3! It is one of my favorite rods I own! I have used it with fairly large and heavy buggers, but it casts small stuff with pinpoint accuracy. It's sweet!

Like chaoticscott I've never fished the Epic but the Scott is a very versatile 4 wt. Between my son and I mine has probably been used more than any other rod I own.
My son has two rods, the 754 and a Scott G2 885/4. He says those two will serve all his needs.

Not sure on exact weights but my F754 pairs well with a CFO III or a Hardy LRH Lightweight (maybe slightly better with the CFO).

I finally got the Scott 754/3 and really like it. I took the rod for two trips now and enjoyed casting it.

Things I recognized:

My other rod is a Dutch Ben‘s fly rod 7.1“ 3wt S-Glass. It is made from a hollow glass and is a lot lighter in weight and swing weight. The Scott feels pretty heavy against it.

The Scott therefore has more power and is faster. I actually would say it is a line weight higher than 4wt. At least if - like I was - using it with a Cortland 444 DT Peach. This line feels a little to delicate with the Scott. I‘m now trying a 4 and a 5 WF line with the Scott.

As a reel I trusted in the forum and ordered a 5.2oz German made Vosseler EDC (a quite one), which balances perfectly.

My first catch was a 19“ chub fish...great drill a the rod was just doing it at ease.

So still kn honeymoon phase but very excited about the new fly lines...;-)

Thanks to all of you!

What do you think of the line weight and the heavier feel?
