This afternoon I got the chance to fish for a bit. Living in Pennsylvania this time of year can be rough. Low water, hot weather, flash storms...etc.
Conditions today was either going to be spring creeks or bass really. It cold off overnight into the 70's today but I did want to stress any fish. Spring
Creeks are a drive too but I wanted scenery and brook trout, so they were not an option. There is a creek I know that is bigger, cold, has brook trout
with scenery and got some recent rain. This creek also holds Fallfish, Blacknose Dace, Chubs and Brown Trout. Fishing can be fast with a dry fly and fish can be big.
When I never know what I'm going to run into I always select one of two glass rods in my collection. They are short, delicate but also have quick recovery and some backbone.
There was a smattering of fish like this and bigger in just about every nook and cranny walking up that line. I made it simple and just
tossed a Black Elk Hair Caddis up the entire right side as I walked up. I took fish dead drifting it then would turn around and skitter it
downstream from upstream and took leaping fish.
The creek was not hurting for water at all. Some of the pockets are deceiving in the pictures. The currents can devour boulders
the size of a smart car. No joke. At times this creek can easily be 3-7 ft deep and its hard to tell. It was very clear with a slight green tint.
Usually I toss an adams wet behind a caddis but...
lazy. simple. peaceful.
I ended up spooking a few fish in the 10-12" range that were brook trout. The overhead clouds were moving semi fast
and the sun would come and go. When it would suddenly appear, I would be exposed and it was like shattering glass as
all the fish would flee. It was really cool. It happened a few times and I didnt mind. Something to watch. You could see
every spot on a fish as it scurried away. Fallfish, chubs, brook trout, brown trout and dace by the dozens and dozens.
I bet I caught 100 fish. It was rather insane and exciting because you never knew what you were going to dredge up.
One thing I know is I love this rod. It is very responsive with a quick tip recovery. Fibatubes internal weave makes this possible.
It is nice to fish a rod that can cast many line weights, hooks fish on a swing by itself automatically. I was just a passenger
as the rod do 90 percent of the work. And there is just something sexy about black fiberglass rods!
I fished awhile then moved way upstream. At this point the creek gets 10 ft deep for about 100 yards of more (?) though s turns.
Amazing habitat with sunk logs and large boulders. Reminds me of the ditch at Big Spring in PA. Extremely hard to fish it.
The fish see you from forever away. You are in the woods too so the trees are no help. I never catch anything here. I didnt again.
Can you see my caddis?
I moved way downstream where the richer valley floor can make low gradient depth with sudden drops.
As the tributaries help fill these immense holes, lurking in the depths are fish that can challenge and angler, but not this rod.
I cant wait to take it hiking into the Seneca Back Country soon!
I love this place. This creek at one time had no life, Look at it now.
