Just FYI. My better half and I were in YNP yesterday. Took a close look at fishing the Firehole. I stuck the thermometer in several areas from the confluence of the Gibbon up to the little Firehole and found the coolest water to be 70 degrees. We didn't even string a rod. The water is already way too warm to fish there. Sorry guys. Look to another stream until September.

Just like here in northern Maine. Crazy heat wave. All the brook trout streams are like bathwater. Thank god for some rain last night.

I was explaining this to my wife just last night,
how responsible fly fisherman sample water temps in the summer months before fishing.

She asked: "What if you make the trip and get there and the water is too warm?"
and I replied: "You find a nice diner nearby, grab a coffee and some breakfast, and then head home."

She was quite impressed with that.

This is a great time of year to focus on warmwater species.

I’m currently in the Adirondacks. The Ausable has been a solid 74 degrees all week. Trying some bass fishing today.

I feel extremely fortunate to have more than few spring fed streams in my neck of the woods.

Last few weekends were possibly the last here in central VA... for trout. My friend just started fly fishing last year and after the last few weekends he's hooked hard. We were catching Bass and ~9" sunfish in a reservoir, after trout in the feeder streams. One day his "one last cast" was 3 fish in a row until they stopped hitting in that spot. He was using his CGR 7-8 wt I believe.

Water temp in the Gulf near me: 88.5 degees.

Today it is currently 92 degrees outside, with a humidity of 62% and a heat index of 106 degrees. NWS has posted a 'heat advisory'.

Summer is most assuredly here. Our summer rains haven't started yet, but they'll be along soon enough, and the skeeters with them. Hopefully the hurricanes will stay away, but that's iffy.

Hellmtflies,
What is the status of the accomodations in the national park? I was looking online, and it seemed most lodges and restaurants are shut-down? I was looking to get out of Houston for a while this summer. Tempratures here are similar to Florida, maybe a little warmer here?

Lucky to have spring creeks nearby. But it has been warm, I'm already fishing tricos.

Thee Yellowstone lake Hotel and the Old faithful Inn are closed for the year. The hotels and motels in West are filling up but not at compacity as yet from what I understand. Traffic in the park is less than normal but I would still go in early.

I thought the Firehole fish were adapted to warmer temps due to the hot springs? Not that I'd be comfortable fishing for them under those conditions either, perhaps just voicing a curiosity that lept to mind.

I am in SW Pa and was on a local stocked trout stream the other evening. Wet wading in flip flops(not that I recommend this either but car fishing from bridge hole to bridge hole on local water.....can lead to this). The smallmouth were on fire... my SFG 4wt had a pretty steady bend. Loved it.

Been rather chilly in West Virginia, just like last year. Lots of rain this month.

Thanks for the information about the status of the facilities at YNP. If we get out of town it probably will not be until mid September....Ralph

A1. find a mountain lake with trout, and start climbing..
A2. find the nearest warmwater lake..

Same thing going on here in CO, the South Platte in Cheesman/Deckers is running 60-70cfs and the rocks are barely wet.
I went up to fish the Cheesman reservoir for bass, the river was lined for miles with a fisherman every 20 yards.. can't imagine they are catching much.
We were in Paonia over the weekend, the N Fork of the Gunnison is usually 800cfs about, today 50cfs.. the river looks very sad and bony..

Guitarfish I missed your question.....apologies.....the fly of the evening was a Murdich Minnow. Smallies seem thrilled with it and I believe that was the critter it was designed for...though I've taken a few generously sized trout on the fly as well.

Air temps of 95 today in SW Pa.......the beat goes on. :\

Ligoniera1,

Are you fishing the Loyalhanna? Just wondering because of your name.

Caught my first Brownie in Fourmile Run and almost ashamed of all the stockers I used to take with a Mepps along Rt30 in Ligonier.

Hope it was called Fourmile Run, but over 50 years ago and memories might be fading.

Also, used to be a big antique shop just west of Ligonier where I found some great bamboo rods.
