With lofty dreams of bull reds and specks galore, Will and I set off early in the morning for grand isle state park. Couple of firsts for me: first salt water fly fishing trip, first fish on glass, first time surf fishing with a fly rod. Despite flawless conditions and trying multiple spots the day yielded very very few fish. Two keeper specks one for each of us.

Will was using his carbon rod and me I was using my new orvis superfine 8wt paired with my trusty Ross Gunnison. I will say not only did the glass seem to cast consistently further with better loading the wind. The fight of a keep spec was so much more fun for me and left will jealous. Well I’m hooked on glass gonna need to get another!

Smooth as butter! Typical Ross quality which is basically perfect machining. Reel is a beef cake aka very heavy. This is good because it really balances the superfine well. Also appears like it might be able to survive a nuke. Highly recommend.

I like to fish glass in the salt, I use the same rod but in a 6wt its a blast. I recently bought an Echo Boost Beach 9wt for those windy days in the surf.

What line do you use on the 8wt? How do you like it?
