My dad.He could catch fish in a bucket if left out over night in a heavy rain storm.
Wind was not blowing all to hard when he made me ,but I still think I would have a tough time keeping up.

[quote="whrlpool"] "Any heroes I had played baseball for the Yankees"

Ditto! Is there another baseball team? :)

But for fishing heroes for me it was Kurt Gowdy and Gaddabout Gaddis.

Oh yah, Kurt Gowdy, the American Sportsman. Plus I think he probably was the sportscaster for some of the World Series the Yankees were in. And there must have been at least one other team. Years later up my way, people claim there is one called the Red Sox.

I wouldn't ever refer to him as a hero but I loved watching Jerry MiKinnis on the Fishin' Hole which I did religiously for years.

My older brother, a couple friends, and I all watched a program based out of BC called Sportfishing on the Fly. It's still going and has many seasons on YouTube https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LQAvtcx99nQ

We also borrowed a Joe Humphreys nymphing VHS from the library nearly weekly.

Gadabout Gaddis of course. Also Lee Wulff and Tom McNally, a forgotten outdoor writer.

Lefty Kreh and Jim Teeny are two practical fly fisherman that come to mind. Was more of an outdoorsman growing up thus fishing was part of it. If there was the ultimate outdoors book then I would include those 2. May be others but not familiar.

Granddad was my only true fishing hero. After I went to college and discovered all of the wonderful angling books and many years later discovered this board and met a few good folks along the way. I've greatly appreciated the contributions and help of many. I've admired their abilities and knowledge, which far exceed my own. But only one hero.

Dave Whitlock for sure. I was introduced to him when he was the keynote speaker at the '84 MFFC Expo in Southfield, MI.
He gifted me with his 2 LL Bean books AND mailed some flies to my house the following week! Caught my first fly-rod fishes at Pinery Provincial Park in Grand Bend ON that Memorial Day weekend on Glass at the age of 14! A true innovator.
Tim England also sent me some beautiful deerhair flies soon after when I wrote him about an article he published in FLY TYER magazine. a precursor to Pat Cohen & Co. now.
