I read yesterday the Ed Shenk passed away at age 93. Not only was he a legendary fly fisher and fly tier, he was a proponent of "short rods" and he had written about building, and fishing with, fiberglass rods, especially on his beloved LeTort spring run.
if you have not read his book or seen his fly tying video, you may want to take a look, especially since we are spending more time at home. the book and video are educational and entertaining.

RIP Mr. Shenk

thanks for the heads up.
the late Mr. Shenk and I traded correspondence in the '90s (it was paper back then). He was a gentleman of wit and humor.

His book was one of my early flyfishing purchases, and I think I learned a lot from it. Happy Trails, Mr. Shenk.

I have some flies he tied and one of his "custom" one piece 5' glass fly rods sits in my basement in it's 5 foot long PVC tube. It was among the last few he built.

I kidded him one day when I bumped into him that I wanted the last one, but he kept building them if you asked him. I also loved to talk Letort fishing with him because I know every nook & cranny he talks about in his books.

A kind man and one of our PA fly fishing legends.

RIP Ed...

Sad news. Does anyone have a source for this information? I can't find anything.

The PA Fly Fishing Museum posted it on Facebook.

His family announced it in the PA Fly Fishing Forum.

Sad to hear, the Shenk sculpin is probably one of my favorite patterns to fish at night. Another one of the great's gone.

Sorry to hear. I’ve lived in Oklahoma and Texas my whole life but have caught a lot of fish on Mr. Shenk’s patterns after my introduction to him via Harry Murray’s Fly Fishing for Smallmouth Bass. Shenks white streamer is so simple but great pattern for a wide variety of fish.

Man it's sad to hear. I haven't fished in PA in 20 years and use to run into Ed when I fished the Letort. I really enjoyed talking to him and learned a lot. Ed will be missed by everyone that knew him.

My wife, Sharon, and I fished with Ed Shenk and Joe Humphreys on the Yellow Breeches Creek in Boiling Springs, PA. Ed kept addressing my wife as a "sweet young thing" and took her under his wing while he positioned her over one honey hole after another. My wife had to beg him to let her stop as she was getting too tired to continue fishing. It is one of our fondest memorable days of fly fishing.

one of the greats.

Ill be sure to fish a LeTort Cricket with a short rod this summer, if we ever get some meaningful rain...

Glad he lived such a long, happy life. I got a few of his patterns in fly swaps over the years and they're quite productive! He will be missed.

I never met Mr. Shenk; never fished the PA spring creeks. But I've read his books, and his articles in the old Fly Fisherman magazine, and my favorite, first-choice-every-time fly for smallmouth is his Shenk's White Streamer (good also in yellow and black!) I, too, think I'll fish a Le Tort Cricket on my shortest rod this year in homage. A great in the sport is gone from us. I'm really SORRY TO HEAR IT . . .

Fish on !
Peter
