For me it is tough going from catching fish where the reel is pretty much used as a line holder mode to hooking a big fish where you have to use the reel’s drag. I did a similar thing last year fishing for panfish aka brim and hooked what I thought was a stump until the “stump” started moving, I forgot to lessen the line pinch with my finger on the cork grip in the excitement then the 5x tippet popped instantly once it jolted off. Must of been a big catfish or carp, the big one that got away. In your case you were reeling in when the fish was taking out line, should of palmed the reel if the drag was set too light but also the waves putting extra pressure on the green fish didn’t help you either. Fishing can be quite challenging at times but always a fun learning experience.
