I found a beautiful Heddon Pal 8355 Mark 2 fly rod with a reel already mounted.

I'd like to remove the reel and replace it but I can't figure out how to get it off.
I'm told it's spring driven but that doesn't help me.

Anyone familiar with this particular rod.?

Welcome to FFR, try pulling back on the rear part of the reel seat, you may need to pull and twist. The reel is held in place by a spring, so you should be able to get it off easily.

Ahh the gold space age looking reel seat? Pull hard and don’t pinch your finger.

Never heard of it, either.

Of course they did, starting with the Heddon Pal Mark Series II-IV in 1959. check out the forum for collecting fiberglass fly rods: Heddon Glass Fly Rod Catalog Listings starting in 1959.

I never owned one, but I remember there is a spring in there, and you are supposed to just pull the reel seat apart. I think they can be a bear to get apart if things get "gummed-up." Perhaps someone who actually owned one will chime in.
A picture would help.

Any aerosal penetrant. Tap lightly; the vibration helps it work in, although it will anyhow. Repeat after a while if necessary. Jiggle to loosen. Force won't be necessary and is best avoided so as not to bend or break something if it pops loose suddenly. Just let the penetrant do its job; tap and jiggle, wait, repeat.

I have seen some in my travels but passed as the rods were short or in very poor condition. But those seats all seemed to function. They are cool in that 50s futuristic way.

OK, I finally googled some images and YES now I recall, I had one way back, might even be buried around here somewhere.
I hate the thought of getting old....
