Last week i finally got out for the first time this year and fished Washingtons popular spring creek. It was cool and raining most of the day and i was surprised how many people were fishing on a Thursday. I used a very old wonderod with a wf4 floating line and Martin 47 reel most of the afternoon and caught a half dozen small 11-15 in rainbows on scuds. Just before leaving i decided to switch to my beater ff84 and wf5 line and a Shakespeare 1827 reel. I finally spotted a nice fish hovering over a weed patch and made a cast, letting the #14 scud sink to the bottom about 1 ft in front of the fish. Then i lifted the fly off the weeds and the fish took it immediately. The fish took while to subdue on 5 x tippet but finally managed to bring it to the net. I estimate it was about 24" or so. Oh, and i forgot to mention that it was a blast to use the automatic reels this time as i have fished this stream for 35 years but never with automatic reels. Im going to continue to enjoy the virtues of these reels in the future. Because most automatic reels are heavy, the correct rod and reel balance seems to be the biggest factor for me to enjoy using them.

Cant wait to go back to play with some other different rods and reels next time.

Thanks for looking!

Sounds like a wonderful day. "Small" 11-15 inch fish, indeed :)

Cool photos and great fish. Makes me wish I had my Dad's old automatic fly reel.

I have never used an automatic reel and don't like how they look. I might one day try the modern Pflueger one, are they any good???

I have found one I liked, but it's not really automatic. It has a lever that ratcheted the spool around a couple turns each time it was pulled. It is in a junk shop nearby, but it is in horrible condition and extremely overpriced (I think) at $35.

I picked up a Pflueger automatic recently and paired it with an Eagle Claw featherweight 8ft, balanced very nicely. I use it for pond fishing here in Florida and we call it the bass canon. Lots of fun and people are always asking me about that reel.

Fun. Used to be one of my favorite haunts! You're makin me homesick Mike.

Here's my Fly Wate on a 6pc Diawa, I was out crick fishin again yesterday

Samson, those are generally called "semi Automatic" and are very useful reels. I have one, and enjoy it, the little lever is not really gonna bring in a lot of line, but makes a great crick reel, where I can get the slack line up quickly to move to next spot. One of our members has even wrote a book on em IIRC.

Majicwrench,

Nice well used setup you have there!
Your spot you remember so well is now almost fishless. I went there a week ago and normally i can spot many dozens of big rainbows in a very short time. This time I only saw 1 fish in the clear water after walking to several locations. There were just two other fisherman there and they told me the hatchery changed hands and the new owners must have done something other than keeping it stocked. There is no way pelicans could have eaten all the fish. Im bummed as fishing was great the last few years. Wouldnt surprise me if something got dumped in the creek and killed it off.

This could take a while to rehabilitate.

What a great days fishing! I've never tried using an automatic fly reel, but seeing how well you've managed to use that classic combo I'm a bit more interested. Perhaps next time I see one at a junk/antique shop I'll give it a second look if the price isn't to bad.

I've seen that creek go up and down, is the story of life. It will go up again.

Nice! Thanks for sharing those photos.

I'm fascinated by those old automatic reels and have several different brands.
