More Fenwick history. I wouldn’t be surprised if Mr. Green was using one or another version of the FF85 in this film: https://youtu.be/LVGHjL4zRy0

I hate reels with that dang rim hanging out there.

Lunker,

Look at the date of the film and then at the rod. It looks like a GFF to me.

It's a great film. I love watching it.

I thought I saw sunlight coming through the blank. That led me to believe it was an FF. Anyway, good enough excuse to watch it again.

Remember several years ago when people were calling some Fenwicks "GlowSticks" and getting nutty prices for them on the auction site?

In '75 it could have either, couldn't it? I thought there was ten years or so when both were sold?

Still see 'glowsticks" there.

OK, This has changed from Fenwick Buff to Fenwick Fanatic,

At 11 min in, Jim does a quick change. He drops out of sight and comes back up with his rod without a reel on it. I can't be sure what the rod is, but they seem different. At 16:34, there is a good shot of the rod. (just before another rod switch). I am guessing the rod with the line on it is an HMG by the lack of visible braid and diameter, but I can't be sure.

LOL, the friend is good. I need another FF 85, as much as any of us "need" another rod.

I sure enjoy that film. Nice that we all get a casting lesson with Jimmy Green.
It looks to me like he’s fishing a fiberglass Feralite in the opening sequence, and then switches to a couple of HMG graphites (and a Medalist!) at the casting pond.

I think the diameter, flex and the timing of the first rod, when he is wading, is consistent with glass. Probably clipped from an earlier filming.
The pier sequence was a stiffer rod and of course the film was in advertisement of the HMG rods both at the opening banner and the closeup of the GFF9010 at end. He was the world champ about that time?

My FF85 arrived and is in very good condition. My SA System 2 8/9 reel balances it perfectly with an forward taper 8 wt aboard. It is surprisingly light for that period -- I guess the wall thickness is pretty trim.

Rollingblock28,

Your use of the OPST Commando head on the FF 85 intrigues me. What weight head and what length tips have you used? That combo should really reach out far.

I found that the butt cap on the real seat is a rubber/sfot plastic insert that is easily removed. It would be easy to make a 2-3" fighting butt that would be readily removable and thereby give you a two handed skagit casting option w/o spoiling the factory original status. I have done this on several rods already,

Haven’t tried this with the 85, but I had an FF858 for a while that paired with a 300gr Commando and an 807 that used a 250. So I’d guess around there for the 85. Keep the tips 10ft or under. The OPST tips or Rio MOWs are great with those heads, or just T8-1q. If you use the .026 Rio coated running line or mono they really fly.

Heddonist,

Enjoy that rod. It isn't a "sexy" rod, but a versitile workhorse.

Heddonist, you can learn a bit about the Fenwicks here; https://wiki.fiberglassflyrodders.com/wiki/Fenwick

Trev,

Thanks for that historical link. I'm new to Fenwicks and my son gave me an 806 last year that I took out yesterday with him on a bassing trip. Good to find out a little bit about the age of this rod. It was barely used, if at all. Still has the varnish in the hook-keeper and clean cork.

What a little gem of a rod! I used a 7wt line on her and it was excellent tossing some foam, deerhair then cork poppers to some really nice LM bass. Great action to that rod, full flexing w/o giving in at the tip. I fished it ALL day of the 8-9 hr trip w/o getting pooped. Nice surprise and has replaced a couple nice graphites I have.

Smooth, light and fun to wield in-hand. Did I say "light"?? Nice!! And handled bass to 5lbs very well indeed.

Now, if I could only learn to strip-strike instead of the trout-lift I'd have scored on a big 8-9 lb pike that went deep into the bottom weeds and twisted free!

I have to stop looking in here for awhile. I keep buying stuff in my excitement to get casting. Watched the video twice. His reel is set up RH.
Today: I bought Jim Greens book, bought an HMG like the one in the closing credits of the video and spent time working on reels.

It's going to be hard to work this week waiting on toys to arrive.

That 7-8-9 is also my workhorse; I use it for everything from light warmwater and big trout with a 7wt to attempting to entice steelhead and stripers with an 8wt or T-200. I've also lawn cast some pretty big bass bugs in short with a WF9.
A Medalist 1495.5 is just a tad heavy, but if you want a DT8F and enough backing for steelhead to fit it works fine. My reels of choice were 1495's until I came into a pair of Valentine 89's, which are just about a perfect fit. Now the Medalists are reliable backups.

There is a joy that comes from opening a mailing tube. That first peek, the first wiggle.

As for reels, Take a look at Flyfish Ohio for the Medalist articles.
http://www.flyfishohio.com/Anglers_Guid ... dalist.htm
and the pinned articles in the classic reels section of this forum.

If I can find some time, I need to go through some of these old posts. There are so many good posts in the archives here.

on my 7/8/9 FF85, I've used a Shakespeare-branded Pfleuger with a 7wt, and an Orvis Battenkill V which is much lighter, with 8wt - both worked fine for me.
Those SA reels should be perfect for the job..
My SA 2 8/9 is the heaviest reel I own except for a 4 1/4" Hardy Perfect which could be used as a canoe anchor..

Does anybody know exactly which Fenwick rod this guy is talking about?
