I know a lot of us have been corrupted by vintage Orvis Graphite.

I know there are a ton of "Far and Fine" fans around there, but I have to say the "All Rounder" is my Orvis that I fish the most. While labeled a 7wt, it is a nice substitute for an FF806. OK, I like it more.

I liked the old 7'6" 4wt superfine. Pretty slow, not much back bone to fight fish with though.

I still occasionally fish my 8'4" 3wt PM10. It's a mid-flexing rod that's easy to cast. Pretty rod, too.Image

Lacks backbone as dustdog said about the #4 superfine, though.

I have an Orvis Western 8'3" 3 wt. from Jan. 1987. It is a great 4 wt. to me. Up-locking cork spacer superfine grip..
The older unsanded Orvis graphites are still nice tools!

I've fished: seveneleven, Far-n-Fine, Henry's Fork, Limestone

They are all pretty darn good. (for graphite)
Better as dry fly rods, than as subsurface fishers.

others I'd like to try someday: Tippet, Trout, All Rounder, Powerhouse, One Ounce

I only have one which is a 7' 5 weight 4 pc Rocky Mountain. Fished it for the first time yesterday and I think I may be in love. Pure fun.

Carlz,
Are you trying to feed my budding new addiction with this thread??? :lol

Mine was a 7'9 5wt. Cant remember the exact model name though. It was my first "real" fly rod. It was a full-flex, 2 piece, with green thread wraps and a black reelseat with rosewood or something like that. I could still manage to get a whole line out of the tip though.

On a fine summer day when I was about 13 I was on vacation. I had came up from the lake to relax in the cottage at the top of the hill. I rested my rod ontop of my mother's mini-van. Well, we had to take some trash to the local dumpster and completely forgot about the rod. It flew off and was crunched in 3 by the car behind us. Sigh.

In that same weekend I managed to cut my foot open and get stitches. It was hard to call it a vacation.

Nick

Orvis (Seven Eleven) 2&1/8th oz. 7'11" 4wt. from 1984. I purchased this bugger originally and still have her. I now fish her only on special occasions like a my 50th and now again this coming summer on my 60th. :) What a great fishing tool it has been over the years.

Hands down may favorite vintage Orvis graphites are the Ultrafine and the 711. I've stalked many a trout with those two rods and find myself fishing those most of the time when casting dries.

Rocky Mountain 7'9" which is one of the best rods (that Far 'n Fine blank used for so many fabulous Orvis rods) I have cast. I often choose it over my good fiberglass faves. I believe it is one of the best blanks ever used for a fly rod.

Some of my favorites and models I own are the Tippet, 7'11" (from 1979), Henry's Fork, and the 4 piece 9 foot Spring Creek. My favorite of the bunch may be H Fork followed closely by the 7'11" and Tippet. But I could change my mind at any point. My brother had the eight foot Trout and it was nice. My cousin back in the day had the Far and Fine and it was nice as well as I remember. I would not mind owning a Tight Loop and a Zephyr at some point although I have never cast them.

The older Winstons are pretty desireable, but I as a whole, I might pick the older Superfines over them.

I took a few pictures of my (one and only) Orvis graphite fly rod. I see more of them on my horizon.

Hands down my 7.5ft, one weight. It adopted me in 1989, caught hundreds
of fish all over the world. The rod has high milage and shows some battle
scars, the tip is down about 1.5 inches and one bent guide has been
replaced. The tube is missing its cap, and has many chips and bruises.
I paired it up with a Ryobi 255MG, they get along very nicely!

Spring Creek, 9'3" 5wt. I have a 2-piece from 1977 and it's as lovely a big-water dry fly rod as I could ever want. It's my Delaware River "holy grail" rod.

My favorite is the 9'6" 8 weight Rivermaster. It is a line rocket launcher, and a great steelhead-type rod. I looked for mine for a long time after having cast one. Second place winner in my opinion is the Henry's Fork; I want to try a Far N' Fine sometime too.

My favorite is an Orvis 8' 4wt 'Tight Loop', a lovely rod.

Years ago, I bought a Orris 7'11" for my daughter to have some day. Never been out of the tube...but since it is the only one I own, it must be my favorite. I tried them all and decided to get that one for her. I hope to put her on some trout with it this summer. Matched it with a small Battenkill Barstock in silver...a very nice combination.

Before I came back to glass, I was fishing Diamondback graphite about 15 years ago. I used a 7 ft 4 wt 'Classic Trout' back east and a 9 ft 4 wt 'Western Series' for out west (although it really should have been at least a 5 wt due to the wind). As the production of these fine rods spun down I bought a 8 ft 3/4 wt 'Classic Trout' and an 8 ft 4/5 wt 'Western Series' to keep for the future. Neither has been fished and they still have the cork protector on them. I do think I am more inclined to the Diamondbacks than I am to the Orvis rods, personally.

I go back and forth between a Tippet and a Brook Trout, both 7-1/2', one a 3-wt. the other a 4wt.
can't make up my mind which I like better.

I only own 1 orvis, a rocky Mountain I picked up while in college. Haven't used it in years. I'm into the diamondbacks though. I went on a buying spree a few years ago. I was picking them off eBay for $50. At least for the lower ends, all american, americana, vsr, even the carbonites. Great rods for the price. I also picked up a few classic trout rods and westerns. And even have 2 diamond glass rods. My total is close to 20 diamondbacks. Yeah, I'm a fan.
