It would be interesting to see which reels does everyone use most of the time with those rods!

Happily, I have way too many to list so I’ll choose a few favorites and I’ll include the reels for DinoC: ;)

Bamboo 3wts (I only own one bamboo 3wt):

    7’0” 2pc Orvis Seven/Three with a 2-7/8” Hardy Perfect

Glass 3wts (I have a bunch, here’s a coupla-two-tree, like they say in the PA coal region):

5’6” 2pc McFarland Spruce Creek (smooth blank & nickel silver ferrule) with a 2-9/16” St. George Jr.
    6’6” 3pc Winston Retro with a Hardy Duchess 1/2/3
7’0” 2pc Tom Morgan Rodsmiths (when Tom was still at the helm) with a 2-13/16" (Baby) Bougle

Graphite 3wts: (I have three, but I’ll list two I use often):

    8’0” 4pc Winston DL4 with a Ross Evolution 1 (original version)
8’6” 3pc Winston WT with a Ross Evolution 1 (same reel as above)

Bamboo 4wts (I have a many, here’s two):

    7’0” 2pc Leonard 38H paired with a 2-3/4” Saracione Mk IV Trout
    7’0” 3pc Orvis Seven/Four with a 2-7/8” Wide Spool Hardy Perfect

Glass 4wts (I have a few, so I’ll list two I couldn’t be without):

7’0” 3pc McFarland Spruce Creek (smooth blank) with a Hardy Featherweight
8’0” 3pc Winston Retro with a 3” Hardy St. George

Graphite 4wts (I have lots, here’s MY favorite too):

8’0” 2pc Winston TMF with a Ross Evolution 1.5 (original version)

Bamboo 5wts (I have a bunch so I’ll list the newest):

    8’0” 3pc Bill Harms with a 3-1/4” N Saracione Mk IV Trout

Glass 5wts (I have a matched set of three, but I’ll list the two I pick up the most):

7’6” 3pc McFarland Spruce Creek (smooth blank) paired an Orvis CFO III (Abel version)
8’0” 3pc McFarland Spruce Creek (smooth blank) with a Hardy LRH Lightweight

Graphite 5wts (I have a few so I’ll list the one I love the most):

    8’6” 4pc Winston DL4 with an Abel Super 4

3wt:
graphite Cabelas Stowaway 8.5' bought for a song. It's really a nice 5wt, usually fish it with the CFOIII and 5wt, as it's a pleasantly relaxed graphite that way. So no true 3wt..
One day I'll get a ********* Western Glass 8'6" 3 wt blank and build it up..

4wt:
glass true 4wt built on a Chinese blank from Andy (glassmaster) 8' in 4 pieces. This is my usual high-country rod, a bit light when the winds get up but perfect otherwise, stream and lake. It gets an Argus LT 5/6 which is an imitation of the Abel TR1 or maybe the Pfleuger Supreme 1834, a solid click/pawl with a fine sound.
glass Fibatube (made in Hardy factories but not labelled Hardy) 6'10" for 3.5wt. Typically fish it with a 4wt line, Hardy was stretching to try for 3wt but couldn't quite make it with the technology of that day. My tiny creek rod. Also the Argus, my only 4wt line, Barrio DT.

5wt:
cane:
South Bend 359 8.5'. This is my favorite rod in many ways, just a pleasure to cast. It gets either the CFOIII or a SB 1133.
South Bend 290 7.5'. also excellent. So far only fished with the CFO, hope to get some time with the SB 1133 this year. That might be a bit heavy for the rod though.

graphite:
Sage LL 905-3, the standard 9' 5wt but in 3 pieces. It's from the early 90s so a true 5wt. CFOIII, sometimes a SA System 1 456. It was my primary trout rod for several decades, then the glass/cane bugs bit..

glass:
silaflex 322975 7.5' claimed to be 5/6wt usually fish it with a 5wt and Martin 67A. When bassing, a 6WF on an Abu Diplomat 178. A lovely rod but if fishing 7.5' 5wt, usually pick up the SB 290.

6wt: all my favorite rods are Fenwicks ;-)
Voyageur FF75-4 for travelling and high country, Orvis Battenkill Mk III for light weight.
FF856 for everything, Pflueger 1495.

Yeah, I hope Doc is ok and checks in here again. Last post was 5 1/2 years ago and last time he looked in on the Forum was 8 months ago. He made a lot of great contributions and shared a good deal of knowledge.

I've moved all my bamboo, graphite and a few fibeglass to new homes. I have three glass rods left, only one is a 4/5 weight 3 piece Steffen build by Mark McKellip. The other two are heavier weight rods.

Love seeing these posts. Thanks everyone for sharing. Here are the top 3 with reels that I'm focused on right now:

3wt - Glass - Barclay 723, Hardy JLH 234.

4wt - Bamboo - Sweetgrass penta 794, Orvis CFO III (BFR made).

5wt - Graphite - Winston WT 865, Ross RR2.

These three cover a lot of ground and keep things interesting with the variety in blank material.

I'm assuming favorites because there's way too many to list

No Bamboo

3wt 6'6" 1pc Honey Lamiglas & 386 Redington Classic Trout

4wt 7'6" 2pc Honey Lamiglas & Winston Pure 8'6" 4pc

5wt Early Model FF75 2pc "Glowstick" & Cablela's TLR 8' 2pc **I own eight 5 weights and this is the one I'd miss the most if I lost it. It's my favorite fly rod and I'll fish an entire day worth of river, stream or lake and I never once think about the rod or what I'm doing with it until I pack it up at the end of the day. Most Intuitive rod I've ever cast. :)

These are all the 3,4 and 5 wts I own. I can't choose between them right now - they're all my favorites

3 wt glass:
McFarland Spruce Creek 6'6" 2 piece
Milenkovic Unstructured Glass 7'6" 4 piece
Milenkovic E-glass/S-glass hybrid 8'1" 5 piece

4 wt glass:
Barclay 70p 7' 4 piece

4 wt graphite:
Scott G754/3 7'7" 3 piece
Scott G904/4 9' 4 piece
Hexagraph 8' 2 piece

5 wt glass:
Cortland Leon Chandler Signature 8' 5/6 2 piece
L. Kenny 8255 8'2" 5 piece

5 wt bamboo:
Montague Belmont 9' 3/2
This one is special because it was a gift from my niece. The others are only favorites because they're a delight to cast and fish.

Yep that Lotic is really different… casts a trout 5 as sweet as a trout rod but can throw a 6 sink tip a mile as well… very strong rod too.. I’ve caught nice smallies as well as 20” blue fish with it…. there’s a video somewhere of Joe Goodspeed of T&T catching 10lb stripers with it as well.
