O.K. guys,
I changed my mind. I'm now looking at Orvis Battenkill reels on Ebay as I don't want another Hardy Marquis clone. Is there a difference between the vintage battenkill and the newer ones? (I'm not talking about the Battenkill Bar Stock reels, I meen the cast Battenkill)
Thanks
ribs

The new product is sourced in Asia, not England. The price dropped $30 and the parts are completely interchangeable. I have four Battenkills in different sizes and just purchased a new spool, it looks identical in every way to the older spool (just not as beat-up :D ).

Keep in mind that Orvis has used the Battenkill name on a few different reel names over the years. I'm not sure which ones you are looking at. I had a Battenkill Mark III reel from 1982. I've got a Battenkill disc 5/6 around 6 six years old and a Battenkill Disc 8/9 about 15 years old. They are all excellent reels.

Are most of these disc drag or did they make some clickers earlier?
Thanks
Paul

The early reels were all spring/pawl reels. Disc drag reels became popular maybe 15 or so years ago.

One thing to consider about buying a Battenkill 3/4 click and pawl on eBay --Orvis does not make or sell spools for this reel anymore. I bought one new, thinking I could always get parts or a spool and found out differently. (I don't know if this applies to the 5/6 or 7/8).

Still, I like my Battenkills. Just personal preference, I guess.

Have both the disc and spring pawl Battenkills - I prefer the spring pawl easily over the disc - they are very smooth and very durable reels.
