I just recently had the opportunity to pick up a barely used Orvis far n fine and as luck would have it a battenkill click 5/6 for a very good price to go with it. Nicely balanced pairing of a classic Orvis outfit. Unfortunately the trout didn't cooperate yesterday but I did enjoy casting it just no fish.

Those Far and Fines look awesome! I’ve seen them pop up before online and I’ve been very close to pulling the trigger on several occasions. Hard to find one in a 2 weight though, and I’m already covered at 4 weight and up.

You won't find a Far and Fine in 2 wt.
The Orvis Far and Fine is a 5 wt. rod.

The Ultrafine is a 7ft 9in 2wt from the older Superfine series (The Far&Fine at 7ft 9in5wt is also from the older Superfine graphite rod series). It is also a very nice smooth rod.

Winston WTs and BTs are soulful rods. I think the manufacturers are starting a new trend towards slower action rods with Sage's new Trout LL, Scott GS, etc.

The new Scotts are nice dry fly rods however the new LL is nothing like the old ones.

Haven't seen the Trout LL yet but I'm very curious because I am fan of the old LL.
So far the reviews have been positive, but again reviews are from fly shops... :)

I was assuming they would be like the old ones. I do have a 844 GS for an all around rod for use here in the Driftless.

I had a 389LL for 20+ years and sold it after one day fishing with a ********* 863...same wth a G884, fished it almost every day on the Yellowstone...it got sold after getting a McFarland 884 that was wrapped up by Bobha. Neither of those graphite rods performed (casting, fishing, & fighting fish) like the newer glass rods do.

Forgive me for not being so well versed here. Between those models and the Trout Bum it’s hard to keep track.

I ended up going with an original Scott G Series 882. I put it through its paces today. Honestly feels like glass, with small browns flexing the rod to the hilt. A joy to cast too, with surprising power in the butt.

While going through my friend Charlie's rod collection I have had the opportunity to cast a few graphite rods that I believe show "soul" approaching that of glass rods. Of course one is the many times mentioned Scott G. Another is the Fenwick World Class 6'6" 4 weight. Today I was casting the Orvis 6'6" 2 piece 2 weight One Ounce. The little Orvis cast beautifully with a Barrio Small Stream WF2, and that rod went home with me. Can't wait to fish it.

That Scott G 882 is nice! I really like the idea of a longer light line rod for fishing smaller dries and emergers on slow water pools with challenging micro currents that can really mess up your drifts. I think medium actioned graphite rods like your Scott G 2wt would be the way to go. Long light line glass rods are tough to set the hook with more than 20 ft of fly line, 12-15ft of leader with slack to prevent drag on the drift. The tip on your Scott might react a little faster on the hook set. Please let us know how it fishes on the water. I have no doubt it is very pleasant to cast.

I did not read through all the responses in this thread so not sure if it's been mentioned before, but I'll add the Douglas Upstream 733. Very glass like, great small stream rod.

I'm curious, we're both rods 3wts?

In general quicker glass rods will have a bit less feel than slower, but nearly always have more than it's same weight graphite counterpart.

Think I mentioned earlier the Thomas & Thomas Horizon series. I realize I should have said that I meant the original Horizon, which I believe were marketed as moderate action. As I recall, they were discontinued due to lack of interest--by a public that was favoring faster tapers. I got the 8' 5 weight, which I believe is a very nice creek rod.

Speaking of playing fish and tippet protection, maybe my old Exori Classic Evolution 366. Bendy little rod.

Still, not nearly as fun when casting compared to glass...

If you run across any - there Rodon Boron rods from the 1980’s were the finest graphite rods every made in ly opinion. Sam Druckman of Sweetgrass fame did deflection tests on all of the ones in my possession and said they had a very good curve to them.

Montana Brothers 904L. Nice smooth slow action that is a joy to land fish on. Just like glass you can feel every head shake and she bends into the cork. Only way I can tell it is graphite is the weight, otherwise cats and lands fish just like glass. It is a dry fly rod but I like a small wool indicator and a nymph on it also. I’ll bring it along to a clave to see what everybody else thinks.

I have been around the Montana trout Brothers in Bozeman - doing the Bamboo event for years they brought their prototypes. Their taper is one of the finest I have put a line on in recent years. The Closest to glass and the Rodon Tapers I am familiar with.
