I wouldn't get overly concerned about the "HLS" moniker. This is probably a marketing derivative of Charle's Ritz's "High Speed High Line"casting style. He actually advocated the use of parabolic rods as tools to achieve this. The stiff mid and tips conceivably favouring lifting a good length of line and throwing a high back cast - at least that was the philosophy.

Rod labels and even line ratings are just an expert opinion at best or a marketing ploy at worst so must be taken with a grain of salt.

No idea at all, my older Zenith (8'9"-marked 5/6/7) is a "tip-over-butt) style, both rods have sanded blanks. About 6 years ago, I spoke to Kerry Burkheimer at a show and he thought he may have wrapped the 9'1" rod when he worked for Russ Peak.

Seen a lot of love for the Douglas upstream, there was an 884 on ebay here a few weeks ago but it went a bit higher than I could afford.
Does anyone use Beulah rods? I have an older guide series which is a nice actioned rod, the Platinum series has got really good reviews , they look great too IMO.

interesting that I dont think anyone mentioned the Redington classic trout series.
I would have thought that this rod had glass soul. Any commentary?

Look at the original post. CT=classic trout.

Is it still being made?

My 12-wt Tarpon rod is a CPX, and a joy to cast for that line weight.
Bought it because it was inexpensive and had a foregrip, but really enjoy casting it.

Gotta agree with the Henry's Fork. One inside bit of info on the rod; when the rodmakers/executives from Orvis needed a wedding present or a presentation rod back in the 80's, they always chose the Henry's Fork.

This one has a glass heritage behind it so I'm banking on it being a winner. NOS GT 40 Fisher 8' 6" 5/6 4 piece blank finished by my friend Mako from nca rods in Japan. We had the idea to do the build similar to the 40th anniversary Thomas and Thomas graphite series.

Just read through the whole thread this morning. Interesting that before glass I’ve used

Redington CT 8’6” 3wgt and 5wgt
TFO Finesse 8’9” 4wgt
Sage RP 905
Sage RPL 903 ( always overlined)
Orvis Clearwater 795 and 865 (both early 2pc)

Sounds like I belong here :)
Plus way to many glass rods, of course!

Tim

Fun thread. It got me thinking about whether any of my graphite rods had a ‘glass soul. A couple days ago I did some lawn casting, and the closest rod is a 9’0” four-piece five weight Winston IBIS. It’s a rod I built shortly after the 9/11 tragedy - as I realized I wouldn’t be doing air travel with long rod tubes in the future.

Just picked up this Scott G Series 882 off eBay.

This is quite possibly the fullest flexing rod in my arsenal. I’m honestly surprised it’s graphite, but I’ve come up in the age of rocket-fast meat cannons. I can’t wait to do some ultralight fishing with it on some of the small creeks around here.

Two of my favorites (both already mentioned here). Both Orvis 5wts... Far and Fine 7'9" and Henry's Fork 8 1/2' un-sanded blanks. Sweeeeet action on both.
