My largest rods are. ..

9' - 8 wt. Hardy, which is paired with a matching Marquis 8/9 reel for freshwater. (I originally bought this for floating the Bow river in Alberta, which is a big river, big trout fishery.)
9' - 8 wt. Fenwick FL108-8 (yellow glass with sleeve-over-butt ferrule) for saltwater.
8' 8" - 8 wt. Scott Heliply 883/8, which I also use for saltwater (punches the line out a little better in the wind compared to the Fenwick).
I am looking to round out these rods with a older Scott G or ARC series 9' or 10' - 8 wt. for steelhead.

My heaviest glass rod is my SA System 7. But I have several two and four piece, nine foot, eights weight graphites that saw a lot of use in the seven years I spent living in Sarasota, Florida. They will make good bass rods now.

A 9 ft 3 inch Hardy 7/8 wt superlight and a 7 wt W&M ... for Salmon in AK, or as overkill for Smallies and to pretend I'm fishing for Musky in local waters when I need to be able to justify having these rods when I only get to AK every few years.

The largest glass rod that I actually use is a Fenwick FF857. I have some longer/larger rods, but they are overkill for the waters I fish.

I have a 9 foot, 5 weight South Bend blank on the bench for a build later this year. I also have a 9 foot, 12 weight Fenglass blank that will probably hold up the wall until I finally set up a tarpon trip.

System 10 expertly refurbished by Andy Manchester for use as a two-hand jetty rod ...

But I also have an FF85 (awesome stick with an 8wt), a selection of 8.5' 7/8s from W&M, Heddon, and others and a larger selection of 8' 6/7 almost too many to list. And I fish them all regularly. The fly line is selected to match the size of the fly and I often fish large flies for bass, pike, muskie, wipers and even flathead cats. I had an 8.5' 9/10 Garcia that I regret selling, I might "need" another.

Wow Joe thats an impressive stick. I would love to have that for flinging grocery flies at stripers!

My biggest glass rod is a 9/10 Fisher blanked LKenny build that I use for striper fishing. Probably fished it 5 times last season and it the perfect rod from the boat as I can horse stripers in while fishing the Monomoy rips.

The biggest glass rod I used the most last season was probably the 8ft 6in Garcia B537A 8wt for Bass Bugging. That rod is one sweeeet caster.

Hi Wet Fly,

Just catching up. Indeed it is Castle Island. My wife was meeting some old friends there and I said "Great , maybe I should take my gear - just in case" I was out for about three minutes and then for the next fifteen minutes reeling that gal in. It is what it is but it has some of the best fishing for stripers - and pretty much all season long - in New England.

I've had good many of those two handed Fenwicks over the years and could never learn to like them much.

I have a 9'3" Gowdy Para/Metric that I've never fished probably because I just never cared much for the way the rod cast for me. I have all the Para/Meteric sizes though and I love the 7 1/2 and shorter, but could never get into the longer ones, but from what I read here many people seem to like them in longer sizes.

Had a 10 wt, extended butt Orvis Golden Eagle that was a tremendous casting rod and should have never sold. I think it was 9', but not sure.

I have couple of extended butt Wonderods that are wonderful 10 wts and will cast with the best of them to my surprise.

My favorite two handed rod at this time is an early 9'3" Lamiglass (fiberglass) that seems to work best with 6/7 wt lines on it. Not a long distance rod, but great with nymphs. Only thing I've ever caught with it was some little steelhead, bass and gills.

Barry

I adore glass and bamboo for my "trout" weight rods, 5 or under. I have been more into throwing big streamers and fast sinking lines for bigger meaner fish this year though and I have yet to find a glass rod that performs up to my expectations. I attribute this to the constant wind in the Chesapeake, my not being able to get my hands on any heavier modern glass rods to try out, and perhaps my casting stroke when throwing big stuff. I think one of Steffen's new heavy rods would do well here, but I'm still not sold on the idea of glass for the style of big game fishing I do. The heaviest rod I fish is a graphite 10wt, heaviest glass is my Fenwick 5wt.

No need to convince me. First time I ever fished there I got a 32" striper in front of a huge crowd on the causeway.
So if you see a guy down there with a yellow fenwick 8 weight, that is me. Although a lot of the time I fish a graphite 10 weight.

I still have the Scott Fiberhammer switch rod that I hope to get onto the water soon. At 10'6 and a seven weight it will be the largest glass rod I've ever fished.

I am hoping to put a striper or two on it before sending it back to Scott Fly Rods.

Hi All;

The biggest rod I cast regularly is a Garcia Conlon 2406, 9' I think with wf9 floating line. It's heavy but well balanced and will cast big, wind resistant bass bugs with ease.

The largest glass rod that I use is an ff856, I fish with it for smaller central valley Steel head. Used it once at Pyramid lake when the wind died down, surprisingly it subdued the Cutts quicker than the graphite that I was using. Perhaps the ability to keep pressure on the fish with out risking the tippet made the difference.

I'm mostly a small creek guy so my largest is a 7' 10" Garcia Conolon 2536-D 3 Star 6/7wt.

I use the 9' Sceptre with a WF7 for Landlocks quite often and recently used it for bonefish. My other big rod is a 9' #9 Orvis Golden Eagle that I built and then cut into a four piece. Both rods fish wonderfully. Though the GE is rather tiring after a few hours.I have a Golden Eagle 8'9" blank I'm told will be an 11 weight. I wonder if it is meant to have a 3" fighting butt? I won't get one anyway but it will be a four piece when built.

I added a System 8 a while back to use to chase salmon. Might have to let ToneMike wield it. Then maybe I'll have a freezer full of salmon next winter!

count me in. then we can catch some salmon AND chase the trout/dollies.

as far as my heaviest rod i fish, it'd be my system 11. i got it for kings and some chum salmon. it'll cast 9-11wt lines with great ease and can handle a very fresh chum in fast moving water ... and it's still fun to fish.

I picked up a FF805 at the post office today that you can use when we chase smaller fish.

Yep, I finally won one! Image It's in pretty good shape so I'm not sure why there wasn't more interest in it, unless it was because of the $20 shipping charge.

6 weight. I defeated a 28", 8 lb. rainbow with my 8 1/2 ft. Hardy Phantom and did not feel undergunned. On the other hand, when bassing with 6 wt. fiberglass at night I've encountered some perfectly enormous specimens that made me wish for something a lot heavier--maybe something in 12 guage. Scary fish.

The largest glass rod I fish is a 11' 6" 7Wt Spey. As for single hand rods. I have a 9'3" 10wt Fenwick, but have yet to fish it.

Lazarus Dept. Store thread, okay I'll play. Phillipson Johnson Profile 8' 7 wt., better with an 8 imo. Anything over 8' is graphite, regardless of line rating. At 70 now, not even close to the strength of a younger me, so love casting and fishing 6 1/2' - 7 1/2' rods in glass and bamboo in 4-7 wt.

Fenwick FL102-7, 8'6" 7 wt. Used to use a graphite 7 weight, but not in a long time. Was recently given a Loomis 9' 8 wt and a couple SA Mastery 89 reels, but will likely not use them much, but that would be the largest for me. It's pretty stout and heavier for anything I do.
