Crazy Cracker, are you attaching a short section of mono to the end of your flyline to act as a butt section (like, 6") with a perfection loop on the end for a loop to loop connection for your leader? When I do that, I use a piece of mono from the butt end of a discarded knottless tapered leader, so that I have a match in stiffness to the butt section of the knottless tapered leader I will be attaching to the perfection loop. I make the perfection loop pretty small, and I smooth the knott with Knott Sense, a flexible glue that sets quick in UV light. Although I have some difficulty with tis all passing through the smaller guides of vintage rods, I sure like the convenience of changing leaders quickly if I get a massive tangle, which NEVER happens to me.

I use Sunset Amnesia for this application. I like to come as close to the diameter of the fly line as possible. I use 40# for my 6 wt rods. 50# for 8 wts.
I like the color of the amnesia because it helps me to see exactly where the end of my fly line is.

Mr. President,

Does "Sunset" indicate the color? And, what color in a more generic descriptor term is that? Do you use a nail knot to attach to the fly line, or something more exotic?

Thanks ribs

I found a chart that list. 021-.023 for 6wt.. 022 -.024 7 wt.. 023 -.026 8wt. does that sound about right?

loco,
Those leader butt diameters should match well to the intended lines. Ideally, the leader butt section should have a similar bending stiffness as the fly line. You can check this by bending the connection. If you have a favorite knotless tapered leader, you can nail knot it directly to the new line. When the leader becomes too short, damaged, etc., just clip back the leader to 6" - 8" and add a perfection loop.

Sunset is the brand.
Sunset Amnesia comes in 2 colors. Red and Chartreuse. I prefer the red.
The stuff is normally used as running line for chuck and duck steelheading.

galleta loco,
Is the chart available on line? I was told the leader butt shouldn't be more than 3/4s the diameter of the line and should not be stiffer than the line. Maybe this is useful ... the Cortland chart found on the 333HT leader packs. They state the butt diameters of the leaders as. 027/0x,. 026/1x,. 026/2x,. 025/3x,. 024/4x,. 023/5x,. 022/6x and. 021 for 7x.
I'm an Amnesia user too. I have 12" dangling from the ends of my fly lines. I make it a point to subtract 12" from the butt sections on my leaders to account for this. I also use the. 19 red Amnesia for butt sections on my nymph leaders. I use it in lieu of a strike indicator. I posted the leader formula I use in the Fly Tying section ...
