Emily Whitlock posted on Facebook that Dave died from a massive stroke last night. As a fishing legend and a fellow Okie I will miss him.

While I don't usually view Facebook as an authority, a post there from Emily Whitlock confirms that her husband Dave has passed. This is a sad day for her, the Whitlock family, and everyone else that will miss Mr. Whitlock's charm and good nature.

I didn’t know the best place to post - Very sad news today that Dave Whitlock passed away late last night. His wonderful wife Emily posted to their Facebook profile earlier today:

Dave was such a kind, patient person who was a true Renaissance man. As a native Oklahoman, I took great pride in having one of the world’s finest fly fisherman, fly tyer, and artist who was born and raised in nearby Muskogee. RIP Dave and sincere condolences to Emily.

RIP to an extremely talented man!

His "Guide to Aquatic Trout Foods" was hugely important to me when I started fly fishing.

That man's smile would light up a whole room - and his handshake was sincere.
Sure will miss him.

The ONLY famous fly tyer, angler, artist etc i ever met and spoke to for closed to a half hour maybe. He was at a fly fishing show In Chicago that was not well attended.I already had one of his books and bought another he signed ,gave my young daughter a fly and gave me enough encouragement to keep practicing my casting and tying. He told me to fish subsurface most of the time. The few people i had seen flyfishing fished on the surface.Mr Whitlock changed my fishing life for good.Have read as much of his stuff, especially warm water as ,as i could.I just got an email from his website a few days ago,his art work was on sale.I wish i could afford his originals.RIP It seems he had the same effect on many of us.

Dave Whitlock unknowingly taught me quite a bit about Bass on the Fly !

Between Joe Brooks , Lefty Kreh , and Dave Whitlock… I think I’m good to go !!

May Dave’s teachings and memory
shine through to all he touched with his generosity.
RIP to the BassMaster

I met Mr. Whitlock at a fly fishing show as well. He signed a book for me, and took the time to visit as well. I read as much of his writings as I could find, & was always a fan of his. He was a great, positive influence on the sport, and will greatly be missed, this side of heaven.

I think this is my first post. I have been mostly lurking. I got to meet Emily and Dave a long time ago at a fly show in the Chicago area. They were really nice. He was signing books and for some weird reason there was nobody around them so my buddy and I got to chat with them for probably close to an hour. I could not believe he did this illustration and put my name on the cover.
What a great gentleman.

I thought you all would enjoy these videos - Kelly Bostian, the former outdoor writer for the Tulsa World, spent a day with Dave at his home in Eastern Oklahoma a couple of years ago. He did an original video on Dave instructing proper roll casts:

https://youtu.be/Pb47tNX6yvw

He released two additional videos yesterday. The first is Dave going through an excellent breakdown of a four-part fly cast ( Dave catches a huge rainbow from his spring-fed pond at end of the video):
https://youtu.be/XCwBn9YYfx4

The third is Dave going through his fly boxes talking about his favorite flies for fishing in Oklahoma:
https://youtu.be/2fl7RC_jfYA

Hope you all enjoy. I learned a couple of new things from the master. RIP Dave.

There are fewer rare down to earth “hero's” in our lives nowadays, Mr. Whitlock was surely one of them, and touched many men and women, for various fishing reasons. RIP

Met the great man a few times, first when I was 14 years old. Very generous with his time.

He was a blessing. I learned so much from his books over the years. I was lucky to have a few minutes with him at last years Tying Symposium, he was genuinely interested in my fishing and where I fished here in the Poconos. He signed a new copy of "Aquatic Trout Foods" to replace the dog-eared one I bought second hand long ago. His signature page is epic!

Dave Whitlock FFF belt buckle that my dad got at a Conclave in the 1970’s and passed on to me a few years ago. Whitlock was so prolific for so many years. I’ll miss his Trout Unlimited articles….

The belt buckle is very nice. I’ve never seen one of those before.

Dave’s autographs are so cool. Every one is unique.
