I'm sitting in my den on a cold snowy Sunday morning watching football. My wife is out of town, the dog is sleeping and i'm bored to tears. So, I've been looking at and fondling my reels, rods and dreaming of warmer days. Most fisherman I know have a go to hobby to get them through those cold winter days and nights. I tie flies, but only at night. I've got a nice collection of books that I have read 3 or 4 times and I've got a nice collection of fishing art and nic knacks that I display and gaze at. I also collect postage stamps that have to do with fishing, fish and flies. I would like to share some of my collection.

What fishing related stuff do you guys and gals collect?

Howard, until today I would not have expected to ever type or say these words; That stamp collection is really cool! Way cool. Thanks for sharing it.

I have been tempted over the years to become a collector of different things; guns, wildlife and cowboy art, fiberglass fly rods, books, Pflueger Medalists, other stuff. I have never actually collected anything. But, I admire the collections of others, especially old stuff that takes some work and skill to find and/or restore.

Howard, i really like those stamps, especially for the art they represent.

Awesome collection! I could fill a bedroom with all my misc. fishing stuff. So I would say that is my collection, not really one particular thing. Fiberglass Rods!

Wacokid54, I know what you mean ... kind of geeky but when I get bored I get dangerous. My wife is out of town for the week and I found where she hid the checkbook and there's money in it. If I'm not careful, I'll be ordering a custom rod so I'll have something to look forward to. Stamp collecting is a poor man's art collection.

flynbird, luckily we have a big house with no kids. I have a room that is "cluttered" with reels, rods, tying materials, fishing artwork, books, cds, muscial instruments, exercise equipment, computer, tv, a record collection and a hugh Beatles collection. I'm still bored!

One thing about stamps; they take up a lot less room than Springfield 1873 musket length 45/70 rifles, or flyrods! I went back and looked at the stamps/post cards again cause I like them so much.

cofisher ... what a beautiful collection.

Besides fly rods, vintage reels, and other fly gear ... I am starting a collection in fine fly fishing art work ...

I definitely have one of Mark's pieces of work on my walls as you know. Fine art.

Beautiful collection, cofisher, thanks for posting the photos. I like to collect fly rod catalogs, especially from the old glass makers.

I'm with you gearboy. Before I started collecting Wright & Mcgill glass rods I had to educate myself. (and still do) I never get tired of browsing the old catalogs because I learn something new every time. Can you show us a few?

Howard, this is one of the nicest and most interesting posts I've seen on the board in a long time.

I couldn't pick a favorite- they are all amazing- first I thought the King, then the vintage 1981 fisherman ... the British River Fishes image is a charmer, almost childlike ... they are all unique and a complete surprise to me.

Thanks for posting,

I've been picking up fly fishing books on my travels for the last thirty years or so. I thought it might be interesting to photo the shelves - not a great library certainly, but some of the books I've enjoyed reading over the years - not that I've read them all.. (That little girl standing behind the three striped bass with her grandfather is my wife.)

Thank you Kevin. I really like this aspect of the sport. The type of stamps I enjoy are getting sort of hard to find, but that is really a big part of the fun ... it keeps me busy and doesn't generally cost a lot of money. Trout and bass fishing stamps and the types of flies we are familar with and would use on our own waters limit the countries I find. I might have to expand my interests.

Duff, that's a really nice library you have there. I see many of my favorites while scanning the shelves. My wife just recently got me Trout Magic and I loved it. Thanks for posting.

Howard, that's an incredibly beautiful and unique stamp collection - thanks for sharing them. I guess I never realized there were stamps like that.

As for the library, I saw somebody post photos of their books on Clark's Board and I really enjoyed looking through the photos of the shelves seeing how many books I was familiar with so I thought I'd do it too.

Jay, I think you already have a library card. Stop by anytime.

Duff, that's very interesting bookshelf. I still read "Tactics on Trout" now and then ...

Cofisher asked me to post some of my favorite catalogs. Here are a few of mine that I like. Some of my favorites that I didn't post are my mid 90's Powell catalogs when they were in Chico. The photo of the Pleissner paintings are from the back of a small Orvis Christmas catalog. I can't find a date anywhere in it or on it. There are no glass rods listed in it.

Great collection, Jay. I love the look of those old covers, especially that 1958 Bean catalog. The 1969 Orvis cover is a real classic in its simplicity. Thanks for sharing them.

Very cool Corey. It's funny that you picked some of the catalogs you did. I just recently purchased Bulldog's Orvis Fullflex and the Bean 110 rod looks similar to a Bean rod I've been fishing for several years now. Can you tell me what year that Bean catalog is?

Besides the historical value of these catalogs, the cover artwork is priceless. Thanks for posting your catalogs.

Cofisher, That photo of the Bean rod is from the '58 catalog that I photographed.

Great, thanks gearboy. That's the year Bean guessed it was from.

Well they aren't as valuable as stamps or books, but this is one thing I have been collecting for awhile,
Image

Image

I have not thrown away a fly fishing mag since 1996. I can't bring myself to do it. I have 243 of them. Image
And yes that is a fridge in the background and yes it has venison, elk, beef and fish in it. Image

Later, Thom
