Hello from SW Mo. My name is Dan and I'm new to fishing glass rods. I've recently found a 5/6 wt.Cortland Pro Crest and a 4/5 wt. Cortland Leon Chandler and discovered that I really like the action of glass. Can't wait to get them on the water. :)

Welcome Bluefeather! I am a fan of the Cortland Pro Crest rods. I recently rebuilt a 7' that is a nice 5 wt trout rod. I dont own a Leon Chandler model. They were a high-end offering from Cortland. Enjoy your vintage Cortlands.

Hi there, Charlie here from New Zealand. I have been fishing the Echo glass switch rods for the last few years and own three of them. The 6# is great on our winter run rainbows on the Tongariro river and the 3# is good for smaller waters, but still too big for my favourite streams - but I have grown to love casting glass. Then I found this forum. What a fantastic resource and helpful group. I now own a 7'2" 4# Airflo fibreglass rod that is going to be so nice on my favourite local little spring creek which has lots of 10" rainbows and some wiley 15"+ models. They respond well to soft hackles and wet flies that I like to tie. I also just won an auction for a 5/6 Eagle Claw Featherlight Parabolic. Paid NZ $30, its never been used. Going to use that for fishing in some small lakes around here that have perch and rudd.
I am slowly selling off my graphite!

Hi, I may be an addict ...the last 2 rods I have acquired are both glass. I spent the majority of the summer fishing the small streams off the BRP with a Steffen 2/3wt 6'6". About a week after returning home my ********* Flats Glass 8wt arrived, I haven't fished, for tailing Redfish in the grass, with anything else since I got it - it simply is a very smooth accurate casting rod. And yes I am already debating my next rod acquisition.....and it will be Glass.

I live and fish coastal SC lowcountry, nearest reasonable Trout are about 5 hours away, but I don't let that stop me when the tides don't provide opportunity here. I have enjoyed the wealth of knowledge and expertise on here already, don't anticipate building but the quality of craftsmanship on here is truly pleasing to the eye.

Welcome, Flyminded! Glad you're off and running with the glass affliction. I'm strongly considering the Steffen 6'6". How do you like yours?

Thanks Tomah, for the fishing I did this summer, very small clear streams/creeks, which often times felt as much like boulder hoping/climbing as fishing I found it to be the perfect short rod, short roll casts/bow and arrow casts, now I confess I only ever fished dry flies with it so can not comment as to its effectiveness with dry/dropper or nymphs. But I don't see why it wouldn't be as effective as a dry/dropper rod ...a double weighted nymph set up may not be such a pleasant experience.

Thanks, Flyminded. Sounds good to me. I'd fish either dries or a single, likely unweighted nymph with that rod anyway. I want another rod for small creeks, and am considering either the Steffen or the Lamiglas #783 which is on sale right now at an attractive price.

Hi from SW MI. Just moved here and now I am looking for some home water. I am just truly amazed by the builders showing their new fiberglass rods here on the forum. They are really becoming a work of art. I am almost ashamed to use my econ rods, but they work for me....for the time being anyway. kzoo

Howdy from the Texas Hill Country. I'm a retired bass guide ( 22 yrs). Started fly fishing 6 yrs ago when I retired. TFO folks talked me into a glass rod for 'gills and I immediately caught a 7 lb Largemouth. I mainly fish private water or drift rivers with guides. Smallmouth bass are my thing and I may show up anywhere from home to Maine or to Ontario. Looking forward to an education here.

Crusty old basser,
You might want to check out the thread on the Hill Country Gathering. We plan to meet in Mason May 18-20 to fish the Llano, San Saba, and maybe a few other spots. Come join us. One of the TFO reps will be joining us.

Larry

New to the forum, but not new to fiberglass. I’ve been using several of the Cabelas CGR rods for a few years now on frequent forays for a variety of fish fresh and salt around my SE Texas home. I love how these rods cast and fish.

I divide my fiberglass fly rod fishing off the dock on the lake I live on or out of a 16’ Jon boat on the same lake or I’m in my Commander kayak out in one of the many nearby marshes and bays. My 2, 4/5, 5/6, and 7/8 CGRs are my lake rods and have taken LMB, channel cats, a variety of sunfish, grass carp, crappie and gar. My 7/8 CGR is a fixture in my kayak and has brought to hand redfish up to 10 pounds plus an assortment of other resident Fish like Speckled trout, flounder, Drum and others.

I’m interested in other fiberglass rods beyond the CGR series and look to get something in glass for my next acquisition. I feel like those fly rodders that haven’t been introduced to fiberglass are missing out on its many virtues and am glad of a resource like this forum where fiberglass loving folks can share their experiences.

Welcome, karstopo! Thanks for the info about fish caught with your various CGRs. I plan to take my 7/8 fishing for wiper this spring, and it sounds like it should handle the load if I'm lucky enough to hook one.

Those short rods pack a big punch! Good luck.

Karstopo,
I've been running into you on a bunch of other boards, but welcome to my real home. By the way, check out my thread on the Texas Hill Country Gathering; maybe you can come join us.

Looks good. I’m not sure I can make this one. I have a daughter graduating from HS about then. Thanks for the heads up, though.

Yeah, I overlooked Texas graduation when I set the dates. Oklahoma schools are out a week earlier. One of my buddies can't make it because his niece is graduating on the 18th of May. One thing you might consider: I and several others are going in on May 15th to get in a few extra days fishing. If you could come then, you could get back home in time for graduation.
