Hi everyone,

My name is Brian and I'm a new member located here in the N.C. Piedmont region. I've been fly fishing for just under two years and my main haunts are the Mitchell River in Surry County, NC and the Smith River in VA.

I don't own any fiberglass rods (yet) but I've had my eye on them for awhile now. I drove over to the Orvis store yesterday and test cast a SFG 7'6" 4wt for the first time. Needless to say I've been thinking about it nonstop...

Since finding this forum I'm already torn between the SFG, a Barclay or a Steffen. I guess I should be thankful my hardest decision in life is which rod to buy :P

Welcome, bmh92! You've some very fine rods under consideration. I fished my SFG 764-3 today on a small creek in SW Colorado, enjoying it immensely for accuracy and control. Its stout backbone wasn't tested by the 12" and under trout I caught, but given the number of snags nearby it was nice to pull the fish out of trouble with no effort to speak of. Of course, I like my Steffen 8045-3 too, for when I want a little longer rod. You can't go wrong with anything you're looking at, and you'll be in great shape if you have all three!

Welcome bmh92. Any of those makes of rods would be great, but with Barclay over in Winston-Salem, it would just be downright neighborly to buy one of his rods.

Hi fellow flyrodders

My name is John, I live in North Wales, UK, and fish mostly for grayling and spotties. My preference is to use a glass wand, 'cause they're magic (is that a collective groan I hear).

I get a great deal of satisfaction fishing with a fibreglass rod, casting one can be therapeutic and catching fish is a good deal more fun.

I've built a few glass rods, but don't consider myself to me confident or particularly competent yet. I've been visiting the forum for some time so decided to sign up, I'm always open to new ideas and sure to be able to learn from some of you guys.

Welcome, Spanner Jack! I'm about where you are with respect to rodbuilding, and there's certainly a lot to learn here.

I’ve been dipping in and out of the forum for a few months now and loving it! Thought I might introduce myself properly, at last. I read a post about new folk not replying after getting info but couldn’t respond in that particular part of the forum. Anyway here goes ! As the name suggests I’m from Argyll in Scotland and after a time away from fly fishing mainly due to raising a family, I’m back as keen as ever. On restarting I discovered most of my gear is now considered vintage. I’ve been slowly picking up items of tackle that I wanted as a boy but couldn’t afford. This time round my enjoyment from the gentle art is not just about catching brown trout and getting away to beautiful places, but also the joy of reusing good , functional and largely inexpensive tackle.
I’m at the start of my journey but have acquired a few glass fibre fly rods - a Diawa and an older Sportex that I am having great fun with. I’ve also picked up some solid glass vintage spinning rods for very little and am loving them also- especially teamed up with vintage Mitchell reels. Fly reels have very quickly become a bit of an obsession :eek. I always used simple , cheap and reliable BFR rim fly reels and I’ve added to what I had in various sizes - 95, 75, 55 - still great performers in my opinion and no need to worry about the odd bump etc. With 3 kids I’m on a limited budget but I have acquired the following reels that I have been very happy with generally- Diawa 720, Roddy 32, DAM quick fly, a Sharpes ‘The Gordon’, and another Diawa , an F 210. I’ve tried to source the best condition models I can find and think I’ve done ok with the budget I have. Anyway it’s going to be a long close season I feel but this new passion is helping. I’m truly grateful for the information and expertise on this forum and who knows in future I might be able to add something! Thanks and tight lines!

Like most new guys I am a long time lurker and first time poster. I got bit by the fiberglass rod bug while libing in Charleston SC. My first rod was built by Marty (EPIC 686) and I am now on the hunt for a few vintage rods. These days I hang my hat in the Texas hill country.

Cheers,

Steven

Hi everyone,Just joined so I could thank you all for great information I have gathered from this forum. I’m lucky enough that I have lived in Wyoming the past 30+ years and have been fly fishing for a bit longer. I get to fish a lot, more than most but not as much as some (I still have a job and a best friend, my wife). I love to wade fish remote river canyons for trout. I don’t collect fishing gear but try to buy good stuff. I have a Scott 7 wt for throwing junk on big rivers and for warm water species (new found habit), also a 5 wt Winston for my main trout rod, both carbon. Three seasons ago a purchased a Scott F2 703 because of what I learned on this site and my dealer carries Scott. What I am really excited about is I learned about Steffen Brothers from you guys and will have a 8’ 3/4 later this month that I ordered from Mark. I probably will not post much, but I really just really wanted to thank you all for your great insight on glass! Thanks again, Dana.
,

Welcome Fishski1, and feel free to drop in anytime. If you have never fished a Steffen 8' 3/4 rod, you are in for a treat.

Welcome, Fishski1! Was in Wyoming summer before last, stopped in at a shop, and struggled to walk out without the Scott 653 that was priced at closeout. Tight lines!

Fairly new to the forum, but really enjoying the sharing of information and experiences.

Curious what rod(s) you chose and your experience with it.

Eagle Claw, Epic 476 & 686, Blue Halo 7 & 8 wts have been acquired over the last two years.

please forgive me if I commit a faux pas as I am new to forums in general and this forum in particular. I am in B.C. Canada and looking forward to my time here. I am new to glass rods and will seek ident on 2 in the near future. My adventure begins with a nice lady gifting me a virtually unused Berkley Buccaneer B 5F -7ft. I had been using a 5 wt carbon rod, the feel of the berkley just totally changed my direction. Now I am driven to explore just what this rod will do and how it will feel under real conditions. Suggestions?
