Hello from California,

Long time fly fisherman but mostly with modern plastic rods. I learned to cast with an old fiberglass Shakespeare 7/8wt rod. It's a nothing special rod, but it was a lot of fun to fish bass, gills and stripers with. I caught my first fish on a fly with it, a striper, and I was hooked on fly fishing for good after that. I have to admit though, I am a trout bum to the bones. I recently ordered a couple of budget blanks to buil out and be used for trout. I hope to share them here when they're done. I'm looking forward to learning from and sharing with all folks involved here at the FFR's. Thanks for having me.

Hello,

New member from Indianapolis, IN. Recently received a few old fly rods and reels that I wanted to find out more about. A couple of rods are Heddon Pals I think. Plan to post photos of them here. Looks like a very informative board.

Have several modern fly outfits that get used every now and then. I am an avid jig tyer who plans to tie flies as I get reacquainted with fly fishing in the near future. Hope to fish the White River in the Indy area for smallmouth bass with the long rod this summer.

Greetings from NE. Long time fisherman just started actively fly fishing and tying about 5 years ago. Have been collecting much longer on and off again. I have always enjoyed fishing with vintage tackle. I do get to Colorado frequently too. Business and typically carry my tackle. I am also a pan fish flyrodder as that is what is available in central NE. Have had the unique experience of catching a couple catfish that hit drys on the surface. A bit redneck but hey unique.

I have a Herters rod blank i collected over 20 years ago. It has never been built except it had metal ferules on it when i bought it. I do not see Herters listed are they not very collectible or just rare?

Regards Bill

Welcome, Bill.

You'll find folks fishing for all kinds of critters on this site with glass - including catfish. We're pretty laid back. I used to get channel cats every now and then on flies growing up in Oklahoma. Good fun.

Our Wiki page has a lot of information on classic glass rods. I don't see a heading for Herters, but I believe these were made by another maker. I won't venture to guess which one, but I'm sure other members will know. I would suggest you post your Herters blank question in the Collecting Fiberglass discussion.

Best,
Nick

Hey Bill, welcome aboard. Herters, like Wards or Sears Roebuck put out practical rods (less fancy trim, same blanks as the more costly ones) and due to the sheer number they are not collectable but certainly are fishable.

I believe the Herter's blanks were made by St. Croix. Try to post pictures. That will surely help identifying the rod.

Herters blanks were made by St Croix, True Temper, South Bend and I think phillipson even made one for them. I have one of their St Croix built rods and its a gem. Thin walled orange-ish blank. "glow-stick" lol you might say.

Thank You for activating my account. I look forward to sharing with like minded fiberglass enthusiasts. I learned on a glass stick and I'm anxious to get back to using one again.

Hello from Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

As a 32 year old i regret to have missed the heydays of glass rods. Recently started to collect vintage glass flyrods and came to love the relaxed action of these fine rods in favour of the fast graphites. Unfortunatly i don't have much knowledge yet about these rods other than what i read on fora like this.
I mostly fish in canals and reservoirs and have signed up to come in touch with other aficionados. I hope to fish in the pool of knowledge on this board so i can extend my collection with more rods, classic reels and flylines.

Regards, Jeffrey

Hello from Minnesota,
well I am jumping into this head first ... I was planning to purchase a finished 4 wt glass this year, but instead I actually won an Epic build kit. Kinda pumped, but I've never built a rod before. I've been scouring this site on builder tricks, do's and don't, and other assorted cautions. Any not-so-obvious tricks on first time build will be welcomed!
thanks
Richard

Welcome. There are good books with step by step instruction by Dale Clemens, Skip Morris, Mel Marshall, to name a few. Plus lots of good advice here and the online rod building forums. If you have never built a rod you might want to practice on a less expensive blank to get a feel for it.

Hello from the UK. I mainly fish dry fly on small rivers and streams for wild brown trout and alternate between split cane and glass depending on how the mood takes me. I'm lucky enough to own a Hardy JET 7' 4wt and a T&T Heirloom 8ft 5wt but my current favourite rod is an Orvis Superfine Glass 7'6" 4wt. It's a sublime rod and the only non split cane rod I have bought new, but it only took a couple of test casts in the park before I was reaching for the credit card.

No pictures of the Superfine as yet, but here's a photo of the JET in its element.

Hi, I'm a new member, and till now fish mainly bamboo and graphite. I'd like to know if someone amongst the glassrodder community could give me informations about some rods seen on Ebay and other sites here in Europe? Has anyone heard of a rod " Fisher glass" for there is one for sale -cheap-; it's a 7" #4 printed: 2041F , what's that means? is it a good rod? or just a tomato pole , not even worth the stamp to ship it? thank you for your help, and excuse if my American/English is a bit "hazy" ...
Best regards
Ifig

Hi there! Welcome to the forum. J. Kennedy Fisher was a manufacturer of fiberglass rod blanks in the 70s and 80s. Their rods are characterized by a progressive, medium-fast action. The blamks I have seen were painted dark brown and had brown or white spigot ferrules.

I have an 8' 6wt rod and a 7' 4/5wt rod built on vintage Fisher blanks. IMO they are fine flyrods. I'm not familiar with the '2041F' marking or what it might mean. Could it possibly be '2047F' -- that would make sense, as in 2 piece 4wt 7' Flyrod?

Thank you Picketpin, after reading you mail I just contact the seller to get it if unsold, the ad says it's brand new, so for something
around $30 (shipping included) I don't gamble my pants. ..! I'll let you know my impressions after two dozens of brownies!

New here - bounced over from the bamboo forum and quite a few names look shockingly similar... :) At least I may not be a total stranger. I like what I see so far and thanks for having me!
