Per the discussion on the Fishing with Fiberglass Fly Rods I am pleased to announce the first Montana Glass Clave in *********, MT, co-hosted by ********* Rod and C Barclay Fly Rods. Tom and 406 Fly Lines will be heavily involved as well. The response has been great and we have people coming from all over the country and world. Dates will be August 17-19th, however, since it is such a far destination, a lot of us will be there around and fishing most of the week. We are receiving quite a bit of snow with some heavy snow months in the spring still to come. The events will be at Sacajawea Park 5pm-whenever on that Friday and Saturday. I plan on having some level of catering, probably pizza and maybe some bbq. I might look to one of the restaurants to host a night as well. Cost of event will be $50 which will include an event t-shirt and food. Saturday evening will include a raffle in which ********* Rod will be giving away a rod and apparel. There will be tons of other items as well. I will publish them when I have a complete list.

Here's a current report of our snowpack with 2 more months to come that are typically pretty snowy.

Lodging: There are tons of hotels in the ********* and Bozeman area as well as lots of camping (lots of free National Forest Camping and Fish Wildlife and Parks options, there's too much to list) a simple search on one of the travel sights like Expedia, etc...will be great for hotels. THE hotel in ********* and maybe all of Montana is the Murray downtown *********.
http://murrayhotel.com/news-updates/
Air Bnb should have lots of options. Here's a local Vacation listing company to check out.
https://www.staymontana.com/
Chico Hot Springs is roughly a half hour south and is a great little resort.
https://www.chicohotsprings.com/

Dining: Anthony Bourdain has done 2 show episodes in Montana, both in *********. For such a small town we have great options for fine dining. Rib and Chophouse (our most popular eatery), Second Street Bistro (fine dining), Gils Goods (wood fire pizza), Yellowstone Valley Grill (fine dining in Paradise Valley), Pine Creek Cafe (in Paradise Valley and one of my favorites and a potential event host), Mustang (Lunch), The Sport, and Chico Hot Springs (a saloon as well as fine dining). We have 2 large supermarkets for those of you who would rather cook. Bozeman is a very hip and expensive town and has more dining options than I could write, PM me for recommendations.

Fishing:
Fishing in August during a good water year can be my favorite, especially because of hoppers. Small Stream fishing can be phenomenal during most water years. Other than the spring creeks fishing isn't very technical this time of year.

For everyone coming please buy this book, he's a local author and glass fisherman. THE best guides to Montana have been written by him.

Fish and game puts out a nice access book that is free and would reccommend getting while you're here.
Montana Fisheries:

We have some very major watersheds here that are world famous for very good reasons. The Yellowstone River runs through ********* and the upper sections above Yankee Jim close to Gardiner and in the Park are great for walk and wade fishing. Cutts, Rainbows, Browns, and Whitefish.
Boulder River: 45 Minutes East of ********* near Big Timber. Cutts, Rainbows, Browns, and Whitefish.
Gallatin River: 30-60 Minutes west and/or south of Bozeman. Great Rainbow trout fishery with some browns, and a Westslope Cutt every now and then. TONS of small tribs too.
Upper Madison River: 45-90 minutes SW of Bozeman. One of the most famous trout streams on the planet and for a reason. I would recommend fishing the walk/wade section above Lyons Bridge. Lots of Bows and Browns
Small Streams: Too many to list, PM me for options.

YNP:
Firehole: Too warm that time of year.
Upper Gibbon, fun little attractor Fishery.
Gardiner River nice hopper fishing.
Lamar River one of the best Cutt fisheries and one of my favorites.
Soda Butte Creek, a smaller version of the Lamar.
Slough Creek, my favorite and lots of potential hiking and backcountry.
The Yellowstone, the Black Canyon, the Grand Canyon, and in between the falls and the lake. BRING Bear Spray, better safe than sorry.
Western Montana has so many great fisheries, if you are interested in more exploring PM me and consult John's book.

Yes!! I’m really excited about this.
I’ll be adding a few items to the raffle as well.
Thanks for taking the lead on this, Dusty. This is going to be fun.

Nice Dusty! just a couple more things. For the original local restaurant try Stockman's - good food, casino machines and bar up front. Matt's Meats in town for sandwiches and other things. Also Glenn's for nice outdoor patio experience.

If you want to try the Spring Creeks NOW is the time to reserve if you have any hope of getting a rod for the day. There is also a few pay to play lakes with huge fish.

I have my raft and will be doing a few trips on the Yellowstone River before, during, and after the dates. We can talk Alexis into rowing so there'll be room for at least one each day.

406 Fly lines will be around with lines to play with at the Park both days. Keep in mind if you make it to the Park there's a separate license required for the Park. If you're fishing the Gallatin towards the Park there is a point it changes to the Park license.

What about breakfast? The ********* Truck Stop works for me. :) X-Mas morning they had prime rib and eggs for $5.99. It was awesome. The best Cholesterol Casserole in town. :)

What no mention of the Neptune and katabatic?! My two favorite places in town. Must stops. I am bummed that I’ll already be back at school that week. I was excited about traveling out to meet all of you folks. We start early in New England, thus my visit will be my usual first two weeks of July.

Two other good places for breakfast, a little pricier but really good, is Pinky's and Gil's Goods. I believe Pinky's still makes Pastys on certain days. I will be putting up some pictures of the water in the area just to whet your appetite.

I'm also working on one of the local fly shop owner to do an article on fiberglass rods and the culture for one of the fly fishing mags. He has had several articles published and is famous, or infamous depending on your point of view, for shootouts. We had been talkng about a glass story for awhile now and this would be the perfect opportunity. My thought was to highlight the resurgence of glass among anglers and talk to the people fishing glass today. Not only could he get to cast some of the top glass on the market today but he would be able to talk to the builders who actually built it and gain some insight on the design. Sounds like a winner to me. Bring your best rods.

George Anderson is a very knowledgeable fly fishermen.
I think a 'fiberglass shootout' would give the material a big push in publicity.

Actually it's Jamie, his son. He does most of the articles. My thought was rather than a shootout do an article on the state of glass today and talk to some users and builders. A shootout with rankings might not bode well for small rod builders and as we all know the vast majority are decent hardworking folks who wouldn't be comfortable comparing their rods to anyone else's. That's one of the things I like best about this small fraternity - there's a real camaraderie among builders and people who like glass in general.

Agree Tom. Fiberglass isn't about distance casting but more about experience, feeling and craftsmanship.

I'm sure George taught Jamie well ;)

Anyway, great idea!

I just made reservations in Bozeman from 08/15 through 08/20. I'm VERY excited and really looking forward to the clave and being able to meet and fish with other fiberglass fanatics! My non-fishing wife will be accompanying me and we'll also be visiting Yellowstone for some site-seeing.

This will be our 1st trip to Montana so any suggestions about other MT places to see and/or fish would be greatly appreciated!!!

Cheers, Stan Norton (flyrod)

Thanks for all the replies so far, looks like it's going to be well attended. After receiving some feedback regarding the cost I have decided that the event will cost $35. We will do one night of catering instead of 2, although I will be bringing a grill for Friday night to cook burgers, hot dogs, brats, etc... PM me with questions.

Wonderful--great to get a few more details.

I've got my campsite booked, and I can't wait to fish and play with some rods.

As an addtional resource here's the phone number and email for the local Chamber of Commerce. Just ask for the Visitor's Guide: info@DiscoverLivingston.com & 406-222-0850. They should be happy to send you one. 2017 guides are still out, new ones come out late Spring.
