Kevin,

Let me know if you need any help or just a fishing partner (I need to try out my new Phillipson Master & Pridex) to tag along with you on your planning trip to S Mills the one day of the week of 7/21. I might be able to get away, depends on deadlines always looming, but I can try.

Mike

Kevin,

Sounds great! I hope I can work it out to meet you there or drive down together, whichever is best for you.

"The Autumn Wild Clave is now scheduled for the October nights of Thursday 16th, Friday 17th and Saturday 18th."

Well, that leaves me out for a couple of reasons. Are you guys all retired or have boo coo vacation? I probably could have made a Fri, Sat, Sun thing, but I can't take two days that close to the holidays, got family to visit for Thanksgiving and will need the time. Well, was a nice idea, hope you guys have a nice time.

Canewrap, I'm sorry you won't be able to make it.

In fairness, I asked two weeks ago that participants post confirmations or concerns about the Clave dates by July 18th. The Clave does include the weekend nights of Saturday and Sunday.

I think I can confirm that none of the participants are retired, can't comment about participant's boo coo vacation.

Mike (graewolf) and I agreed this week to postpone our South Mills recon until the week of August 4th (penciled in for Thursday the 7th) based on our scheduling commitments. We are hopeful his youngest son Tim will walk the twelve miles with us ( but not too quickly). Our plan is to start early parking low and high and just enjoy hiking at a clip, shooting photos and hopefully just a bit of fishing depending on the water and an early start. We have a lot of daylight now which is nice.

I'm bringing Tim along (who is a local fireman) to carry me the last few miles! I don't know if he can carry both of us though Kevin!

I'm going to stick this event to the top of the forum so it won't get lost. I'll add it to the calendar also.

Canewrap,

If it'll help, I'll commit to hiking out on Sun., so if you could get yourself in Fri. (or even early Sat.) you'd have some company coming out.

The Mills is currently at 24 cfs, very low indeed, part of our ongoing regional drought. It's kind of like following the presidential polls, though- rather meaningless until we get closer to the election/Clave! There have been spotty heavy rains- on the 29th I believe, 1/2 inch at the Asheville Hendersonville Airport- and nothing in Pisgah Forest. The South Mills flows right between the two reporting stations!

Mike and I will not walk the route until at least this coming week. Let me be forthcoming, I had a 2cm renal cell carcinoma removed along with 20% of my right kidney on July 28th and had hoped to be in shape to do the hike earlier, but the doc still says No. Prognosis is excellent, +95% complete cure, but the healing is a bit slower than anticipated as to full energy. So stay tuned for those photos and trip report!

K Mac: this coming week at the soonest! Take it easy, go slow and allow yourself time to heal and then let's get out there and hike that river and catch some trout.

As to rain, one of my sons was down around Nantahala yesterday, mountain biking and he said they got torrential downpours down that way, all day heavy rain. So hopefully that came on up to South Mills?

What is the latest guys? Is it too early to talk about food and drink plans for the event? I have to plan ahead if I need to move a pony keg and 25 pounds of meat several miles.Image

Hopefully a hurricane will churn up some rain this direction. With the low levels and high temps, I am off the trout until the NC Delayed Harvest season opener most likely..

Regards,

HH

I've also heard the area got big rains a week or so ago. We are expecting some serious Fay rains by Tuesday or Wednesday, upwards of an inch a day "they" say, but who knows. Definately looking more promising in the short term anyway.

Food and drink for the clave- Wow, I haven't even planned tonight's supper yet Image But I'm up for suggestions (the Clave, not the supper). Bring 'em on ...

What are we looking like for numbers at this point? We have a local guy who makes some great sausages (buffalo chicken and blue cheese, Irish bangers, cheese brats ect.). I would like to bring some for a lunch or dinner, but will most likely need to order in advance.Image

HH, at present it's on the order of 10-12 in and out over the several nights. I would suggest holding off for a few weeks to commit to purchases so we can confirm exactly how many we'll likely have in one place, on which nights. I'm hoping for a few more Clavers.

Great meal planning, I would LOVE to have those on the fire for sure!

I am still hoping to make it up for a day. It might be Thursday ... since Friday is our anniversary.

Ha! Cameron, from one who has been married for 30 years, take my advice and don't go fishing on your anniversary! I hope to pop in there on Thursday too for the day and depending on my schedule, maybe the night too, so I hope to see you there. I'll bring lots of peanut butter just in case all these big food plans don't work out. I love peanut butter and fiery hot chutney sandwiches! Image Image

K Mac, let me know when you want to go hike that river and scout it, and I'll try to work it out if you want company. I'll be in Minnesota next week though.

Good news- Fay is dumping much-needed rains on us as I write. Today's Mills River reading was 178 cfs, up from 9 cfs (gasp) recently ... and the forecast is for pouring rain through late Wednesday, at least.

I fished the low-water French Broad (of which the Mills is a trib) for bass on Saturday, a comfortable first time out for me after a few weeks recuperating from minor surgery (Ledges Park adjacent to the river- and the firm footing- make for very easy access). The rock behind me is under water by now ... I'll be good to go to the SoMills shortly.

More later- thanks for all those rain dances!

middlemac ... I like that photo. We're getting a good soaking rain as well right now. We can use it.
