I am a retired Bean-counter. Fly-fishing has been my avocation since college days in Indiana where I fished small lakes with my wife paternal grandfather's Cane fly-rod, circa 1940. It was a Shakespeare with 7 weight level line that had to be oiled to float. It had an automatic self-wind reel. He had received it as a birthday present and never used it, so I self-taught myself how to use it, cast, etc. and I was hooked for life.

A bad ticker, now "under repair," slowed down my fly-fishing (I have a LVAD installed so I am not allowed to wad).. The last real trout fishing I did was in June 2011 on the Moy River in Ireland (its supposed to be the best Atlantic Salmon River in Europe). It was a blast If you are interested I have the name, e-mail, and phone number of a very good guide in the Foxford Area who can set you up with bed and breakfast on the river. He can also supply all the gear if necessary.

Hi, to all,

Neal

I'm a Network Engineer for a web hosting company, not really an "engineer" per say- just a level of certification I acheived and it is my job title. I like my job but could hardly say I love it, I really miss doing installs of equipment though like in my last job at a school district. School districts pay peanuts to IT folks but there is something about going into an empy room with some racks and cables and then when your done it is filled with equipment allowing the campus to get online and work, I always took pride in that. I guess I have always liked working with my hands and just miss it.

At my job I just sit behind 4 monitors doing work tickets and putting out small fires that I find in our montoring systems, never get to put my hands on real equipment though (all work is done remotely). The job does allow me to get in some fishing and it pays the bills, so I'm happy.

Pilot for thirty some years, last eighteen in little 37 to 50 seat commuters (Dash 8's). One Friday night got out of an airplane and said I don't want to do this anymore so I didn't. Took year off and went hiking, biking and fishing and since I always thought it would be fun I went to trucking school. Drove fuel tankers for six months on the Eastern Shore of Maryland until boss told me I had to start driving into DC and Baltimore in the middle of the night, so I went fishing again. Also thought would be fun to do auctioning, so went to school for that and did about 75 auctions for others back in the 1990's.

That's about it for now, but I retired to early and do need to start looking for a job. From what I hear the market isn't real strong for us guys in our 60's.

Hello all. New to the board and fairly new to collecting rods. My desire to collect vintage rods/reels came after finding and inheriting my pap's(deceased) old fishing equipment. He passed away when I was 7, but I remember him taking me fishing when I was young because I liked it so much. As I was looking through his tackle box, fascinated by the old lures, my gram noticed an aluminum case in the joists. Inside was an unbranded bamboo fly rod that needed some tlc. With my pap having been a craftsman, I decided to put new guides on it. That was my first rebuild effort, and ever since I've been playing with any old rod I can get my hands on. haha

As far my occupations and trades, I'm currently a chef and a carpenter/roofer who contracts and sub-contracts. On top of that, I'm a full time fly fisherman who is building experience to guide and planning to open an outfitter/guide service down the road. Now I hope to incorporate the vintage rod building/rebuilding into it. I have my selection of newer model rods, but I love telling people not to spend a fortune on fly fishing equipment. Now I have several outstanding vintage rods/blanks to show them that I've spent as little as $2 on. Some are good as is and some need rebuilt, but all of the spun glass rod blanks that I find seem to be as strong as an ox.

G’day all,

I'm new to the board too. I've been a fly fisherman for the last 3 years, but I'm new to 'glass. I don’t even have a 'glass rod yet, but that will change very soon.

I’m a geologist in a large mining firm that produces iron ore in Western Australia. I specialise in computer modelling of geology. I’ve been working in geology for about 22 years now, mostly in gold exploration.

For a while I also ran my own landscape photography business with 2 galleries; one in Kalgoorlie and another in Fremantle. It was fun for a while, but eventually it wore me down and I returned to geology where it’s easier to make money. Fishing habits/obssessions are fairly expensive to maintain! :)

Cheers,
Graeme

Hey guys. New to the board. I'm a fly fishing guide and a contract fly tyer. I've been working full time in the FF industry for around 15 years since I was just out of high school. I recently got into wrapping fly rods and if I get good enough in the following years, I might start selling a few of those on the side. I currently don't feel experienced enough to warrant asking people money for them, so mostly I just make them for myself, my clients and my friends. It's nice to meet you all.

My name is Martin, I live in Stockholm, Sweden, with my wife and our dog. For the last eight years I have been working as a welder, but last fall I began the jorney to become an architect at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm.
I started fly fishing last year, and building rods five or six months ago. My friend chform (here on the forum) lured me to the glass-side, and I love it. So far I have only made three rods, but since I am trying to find new fish to build rods for I guess I'm hooked :)

Even though it's in jest ... the shutdown and congress' lack of doing anything, somehow has meant just as much if not more work. go figure ...

Wait a minute!? I was told you just had to pick up a glass rod, head out to your favorite stream, and bi-monthly sustenance checks would start to appear. You guys mean to tell me your fishing adventures don't support themselves? Bitter disillusionment here.

At least I have a job for which I'm very thankful. I get to plan and build parks and trails for a county in Northern California.

Since 1977, I have been employed as an industrial sewing machine mechanic. I have been displaced many times over the years, having worked as a mechanic, salesman, sales technician, and again mechanic in this dying industry. Today I am the maintenance supervisor at a high end mens dress shirt manufacturing plant in Pennsylvania. I love my work, I just hope I can keep doing it until I am old enough to retire ...

Retired after over thirty years in service to the Navy, both active duty (QM2/SS), reserve (CDR, SC, USNR), and civilian (Logistics Management Specialist). Now living the good life with my beloved bride as far inland as I could manage.

I am a rank novice fly fisherman. Bought a few bamboo poles on eBay , two of which were keepers - a Montague Sunbeam and an unmarked beauty that I've been told was made by one of Hardy's apprentices. I had the latter rod restored by "Bamboo Mike" Longuil (RIP) and it's a joy to fish.

What brought me here is a rod I found in the attic which belonged to my late and much-lamented father-in-law, Chuck Hattey – a Phillipson Deluxe DF76, which was probably the last rod he bought before he passed in 1976. Chuck was the consummate fisherman – he couldn’t pass by a body of water, however small, without remarking, “I’ll bet a man could get a fish out of there.” Back when Bennett Spring State Park (Missouri) had Park Rangers, the Rangers knew him well and would win bets on him – “I’ll betcha that guy’s gonna have a fish in the next five minutes.” I'm delighted to have one of his rods.

<180 days out from retiring from the Navy - Civil Engineer Corps (Seabees), Diver, Ocean/Mechanical Engineer.

The Navy has sent me to some unique places - the first 3/4 of my career I spent chasing waves in my off hours. The last few years I have spent casting graphite and now fiberglass rods.

Not sure where I'm going, but I know I'll be trying to fool fish with a magic fiberglass wand.

I'm a 59 year old (or young) Anesthesiologist and will continue to be one for the next 5 years. My wife keeps bugging me to cut back but I enjoy what I do and would find trouble with too much time on my hands. I plan on moving to Sheridan, Wyoming when I retire. I have a wife, 2 self sufficient kids and 2 dogs.

That's much better than to self sufficient dogs and two kids.

And welcome.
