What an interesting thread to read through. I will toss my hat in to the ring....

I am formally trained as an architect but do not practice. I prefer to have my hands dirty, so I work as a designer, drafter and fabricator for an architectural precast concrete manufacturer. I also lose money on the side as a part time rod builder and tackle crafter.

ok, I'll bite.

24 years as graphic designer for various types of companies... water filter manufacturer, architecture, and now for one of the largest department store chains in the country (the only state we're not in is Hawaii). I'm a certified (as opposed to certifiable) Adobe Photoshop expert. Which means I do photoshopping all day for a living.

High school robotics/engineering teacher for the past 7 - "archaeologist" for the 8 before that (don't ask).

Blacktail 53,

I was in the timber industry for 20 years, until the spotted owl wiped things out....
Then went to FEDEX, where I ran a rural route in the mountains in southern Oregon.
Currently retired and trying my best to fish as often as possible!

Retired in 2014 from the aerospace & defense industry. Before that, served in the military and worked in the semiconductor industry.
Goal is to fish more in any one year than I had in the previous 10 ...oh, yes, and build fiberglass rods. Have 5 under my belt; one wrapped & ready for finish.

I retired early as a metal fabricator and real estate Mogul and soon discovered I had waaay more available time than available money.
I need to find a pastime more economical than E-bay and beer. I`ve never used a fly rod but it`s always appealed to me. Thanks in advance for any advice or info.

Welcome Parker. You can edit your profile to add a location which can help with local info and maybe a meet up or two.

I started out in the Navy as a Nuclear Machinist Mate then went into commercial nuclear power. I have since moved on to an Operations and Maintenance specialist (jack of all trades) for a district cooling plant in Texas. I do not miss the long hours of shift work!

I was a high school math teacher for 23 years. Retired now by the good graces of my lovely wife. Now I'm fishing and rod building more than ever.

I am a chemical engineer working as an industrial manager in the compressed gas industry, particularly for semiconductor products. Responsible for making sure designs are safe and viable, there for commissioning and troubleshooting for my plants in the Asia, Europe and the US. Lots of opportunity for foreign flyfishing for me.

Better update mine to self-employed glass rod builder and stay-at-home dad. The Charleston, SC area isn't exactly a hotbed of biotechnology...

Was an environmental educator and site manager for the Pennsylvania state park system for 35 years. Started using glass in 1970. Retired in late February, 2010 and a week later was in New Zealand. Can't beat the climate and the trout fishing is pretty good, too. Do miss brookies, though! Am chief beagle walker and fish as much as I can. Appreciate all the information shared on this board.

I am a Mechanical Engineer who works in the rubber industry. I like to know how everything goes together and works. I guess that is why I like building my own rods lately.

I would like to start off by just saying hello to everyone. I am brand new here so please forgive any mistakes I may make. I am a retired carpenter and builder. I have only recently, a couple of years now, begun fly fishing. I started into it backwards, I suppose, as I have been tying flies for friends and family for about 15 years. I will say that once I started it became an addiction. It is one of the most enjoyable pursuits, I can't say hobby it's more than that, I have ever been involved with. I wish all the every best and hope you don't mind too much if I pick your brains apart.

I do have a question I would like to put forward but I'm not sure if this is the proper message board. It is about a recent and my first fiberglass fly rod purchase. It is vintage and I'll just leave it there for now and perhaps I can get some guidance as to where to ask the question. I wish all well, may God bless and hope to hear from someone soon.
