Just a general question about gear for this get-together. I expect a 5 or 6, or 6 and 7wt is appropriate. Waders and such. How about flies? As I do not tie, what can be done about this? Are the patterns that will be known to be necessary available? Glenn

Glenn,
The big female sandbass can get up around 14" -15" , so yes 5-7 would be appropriate. Waders are a must. As for flies: clousers sized 4-6, Woolie buggers white with yellow tails , and ghost minnow patterns work well. I have a deadly go-to pattern which was given to me by local guide Andy Moreau- it's 1/80 jig tied with a flash tail and a built up thread body.
I will have a few extras of these for you to try.
Should you have any other specific questions just send me a PM.
I look forward to seeing you there.
Les

Les (keebranch) pretty much nailed it with the information he posted. The flies he suggested will all catch Sandies in that area. Another couple of flies that have worked well for me in the past is a Spoon Fly tied on a size 6 hook and a Blind Chicken (white, chartreuse, yellow and any combination of these colors) tied on #6 hook.

Glenn ... I would also add some flies in a size 8. I have found that changing sizes works better than changing flies in the Nolan. Floating or Intermediate lines are fine. Carry a water bottle (or your favorite adult beverage). Call me if you have any specific questions or want to try the river sometime before the Glasssic.

Les,
Can you post the name of that fly or a recipe?
I'd like to start making some now in case I get to sneak that way.

Barry,
Would you estimate the drive time to be about 2 1/2 hours from here?

Jerry

Great info boys. I have just returned from Titusville, FL from two weeks of Indian River Redfish, bass boat, Catfish, from the dock, and Blues in the surf off the National Seashore. My line finger is itching for some Bass. As it is quite a trip for me, I think it may be a good idea to come early. Glenn

Tim, the manager of Indian Lodge is holding all the cabins for us until Feb. 1st. Don't forget to contact him for reservations.

I call it the Andy Moreau fly only because it doesn't have a name.
Materials needed:
1/80 jig head
flash
thread
zapagap

Recipe:
Jam knot the thread near the head and underaly to the bend tie in a flash tail. 3 fibers folded over will do.
Wrap back up to the head creating a heavier build-up as you go. Whip finish. Lay down some zapa gap on the thread to add strength and durability.

Sorry I didn't post back to you sooner, but I just read your post.
My GPS program shows that the driving time between Van Alstyne ans the Indian Lodge to be 2:30-2:45 hours.

TTT,
Just a remindewr to make reservations at Indian Head Lodge for a room or an RV space.
Further aways there a some state parks but you'd be looking at a 30 minute commute.

Les, I can't get your message thing to work. I am going to go over early, just talked to Tim and reserved a RV space. Can I buy some flies, like the ones you mentioned and have them sent to me as I will be there several days early? Glenn

FB,
They don't sell the Andy Moreau fly, but you can purchase the others at a fly shop.
Do you tie flies?

No, and I have no plans to. I have to buy them. Sorry, didn't mean that to be a short remark. I have thought about it and I just have decided that it would be better to buy them. Some guys like to make and sell them and I intend to support their pastime or vocation.

Guys, I'm going to end up backing out.
I have too many irons in the fire with a presentation the following week to the local FFF chapter.
Also, Rob Sherill and family are coming this way that weekend and I would like to meet up and fish with him a bit.

This is a reminder that if you're remotely interested, now's the time to make you reservations with Tim. This coming week he'll be opening the remainder of his lodging to the general public.
I look forward to seeing everyone there.

Everyone ...

Even if you aren't interested in spending the entire weekend ... this is shaping up to be a great time with some like minded people. Looks to be a good group both from here and another Texas based fly fishing board.

Everyone is welcome ... it will be great to meet some of you there.

David

Hey Guys
Just a thought ... bring any vintage tackle (rods/reels) that you'd be interested in selling, trading, and/or bartering.
We could have a swap meet of sorts in the evenings after the fishing.

Hey Cameron ... I found a guy in Amarillo, thru Ron, who will make replacement caps for Valdex reels. I don't know the cost yet. But I will let you know ... as for the Spring ... maybe Ron can make one ...

This little gathering on the Nolan should generate some stories ... probably nothing to do with fishing.
