Hi,
this double/single hand project based on the Epic 686 was on my bench for a while now.
This rod will be dedicated to small salmons on small french britanny rivers. Perfect for roll and spey cast in this tiny streams.
The rods is perfectly balanced in the two versions. The 6 inch butt is easy to fit in your pocket.
Transparent wraps on snake brand original, Lemke GH1 reel seat and nice portuguese flor cork as usual.
Thanks for looking

It's an interesting idea, no doubt.

I am genuinely interested in the question of why you'd make a two handed rod from a 686. What can you you do with it in the two handed configuration that you can't do in the single handed configuration?

(The question is not a criticism but a desire for insight. I'm in the middle of studying for my Master Casting Instructor certification. Part of that exam contains a section on single hand spey casting, including hauls during those casts.)

What line will you be using on the rod?

Cheers,
Graeme

I can’t answer for the poster, but I find SH Spey casting to be pretty tiring, so I can see the appeal of being able to introduce the bottom hand to the cast to change things up over the course of a day to reduce fatigue.

I have added shorter -- 3" -- 'fighting butts' to several SH rods in 4-6 wt 9' profiles with some good results.

-- As stated above it makes spey/skagit casting all day much easier and consistent as it negates the fatigue factor.

-- The extension serves as a rest/pivot point on my forearm in fishing out the cast and managing larger fish, thereby easing the beating on carpal tunnel in my wrist.

-- It keeps my reels out of the dirt while the rod is leaning on a tree, car, wall etc,

-- You can use the added weight in the butt section and even supplement it w/split shot to make modern ltwt reels better balance heavier fiberglass rods.

So far no commercial rod makers have made this an option so I guess it is only an idiosyncratic blessing.

Thanks guys. I knew there had to be a reason there.

Cheers,

I use the Swift 580 as a single carry, general purpose rod which sometimes means I end up fishing some lighter streamers with it. I've found that for me the least fatiguing way to fish them, even if there is space for overhand, is to lightly grab the close to non existing "butt" of the normal reel seat with the off hand and spey cast. It works surprisingly well.

Whenever I end up doing this I think about building either a 580 or 686 with detachable fighting butt so I'm very intrigued to see one. I'm unfamiliar with the GH1, is it a double function reel seat as standard or did you turn some additional parts?

Lovely looking rod!

I am really interested in that 6" butt extension: is it screw-in? If so, what fittings did you use, both for the extension, and inside the reel seat?
thanks

I also wonder what advantages the 6" length extension gives over the 3" one?

Not a 6", but a removable 2 and 3" on an 8'6" 6wt. Using the same hardware except the seat for attaching

Hi Graeme,
Sorry I was far from the forum for a while now.
I think all the explanations where given to you ;)
-To reduce fatigue
-The extension serves as a rest/pivot point
-it makes spey/skagit casting all day much easier
-For the fun of the built wich result in a beautiful and unusual rod :)

Hi,
this GH1 is just the reel seat, I use a screw extension for fighting butt and mount it on a 6" piece carbon blank.
thanks

The 6" make this extension a real and confortable rear DH handle ;) not a simple fighting butt.
The rod is perfectly balanced in DH mode as in single this is due to the long front handle who allow two different hand position.
