Just finished this sucker... whew! Have had this blank since November and was very apprehensive about starting on it and picking out the components. That and I got into turning wood around Christmas so was busy doing that for a couple months. Insert is Bethlehem Olive turned/finished by me for the LC 14 champagne seat. Cork turned by me. Snake brand black nickel guides, mildrum stripper, YLI Golden Green Silk. Very light in hand at ~2.1oz.

By all accounts, this is one hell of a blank so I hope I did it the justice it's due. But I haven't even test casted it. Waiting on spar to cure is excruciating! (guess I'll start on that 70p in the meantime...)

You done good! Great job on the turnings, and the wrappings look great on that blank.

Your rod looks just beautiful. But, “golden green silk”? I don’t see any hint of green.

I really like olive wood. Every time someone posts a reel seat turned from olive I find it really striking.

Thanks everyone! On the thread color, yeah it really is called Golden Green (YLI #159, 50wt). It's the same as what I used on the Proof Olive. As a comparison, here it is next to copper and old gold, so it does kinda have a olive hue but shows up browner than anything else.

Brockton, I agree on the olivewood, particularly the Bethlehem. It turns very nicely, and at first seemed uneventful . But then all that marbly goodness showed up with the touch of finish. Beautiful. Here's a pic of the more interesting side, which I positioned on top of the rod. I wanted something subdued for this build, and the olivewood and champagne seemed to complement each other. And couldn't deny the match between the sienna lines in the olive, the blank and the thread.

I especially like the spacer and how you placed your vintage style hookeeper. Nicely done.

Very nice work Randy. I also really like the reel seat insert. In fact I just like the overall esthetic. I hope you like it when you finally get to cast it, but if you don't I would be willing to dispose of it for you at no charge.

Larry

Very fine build, all components complement each other well. What was used to finish the spacer after turning if you don’t mind me asking?

Well, heck, from the man himself... Thanks Chris! And again, great to meet you man!

VDub, finish is Tru Oil. 4 to 5 coats for a satin sheen.

Oh and Larry, you are providing a tremendous service, helping to avoid filling the landfills with all these "unwanted" glass rods. Truly selfless! ;)

Thanks for the kudos all.

Thanks for the tip. I’m at the point it sounds like you were a few months ago, just starting to play around with turning wood/cork. We’ll see how it goes.

Preast,

What was your thoughts on the Spar Varnish and what varnish did you use. I avoid spar for 3 main reasons.

First, I can get very good results with epoxy, if I don't get impatient.
Second. I have a hard time matching color with spar. It darkens thread and i have a hard time figuring out what it's going to look like.
Finally, the smell and drying time. I build rods in the basement and oil based spar varnish can be detected upstairs by "the one who must be obeyed". And getting the correct time between coats and waiting for the whole thing to dry.

It looks wonderful, so you seem to have it figured out.

I've bought a couple of vials of Man o War from Proof. Thanks for the compliments, but I don't feel like I've figured it out. There are a few tiny bumps from bubbles that you can't detect in the pics. Any others I had I was able to correct before the next coat. I *thought* I'd done my homework, and then afterwards I read all the issues with a brush and getting bubbles. I ended up having to pop the bubbles before it stopped flowing, and that made for a difficult time getting a really level surface. I think if I'd used the right tool (still hadn't figured that out yet), then I wouldn't have had to go back and disturb the surface.

That's why I posted such detailed photos--I wanted feedback because I felt like my surface might be a bit wavy. Granted, this is less than 10 rods into building, and the 2nd with spar, so I don't expect to turn out perfection. I see the Barclay and Leiderman rods and am amazed at how they get that smooth surface.

I tried like heck to use spar as an initial coat but I couldn't get the "tunnels" to go away. So a thin coat of TM Lite was first. I adopted the common suggestion of a coat of spar every 24hrs. So I just did one every day after work.

So, I agree, and prefer epoxy. Spar is tempting though, because it feels less permanent, more forgiving, won't droop or run, no turning. Sometimes just another coat can fix a problem, but it's relentless in the application as you've implied. I mainly used on rods like this because I figured I'd try to do something traditional. Also, I found that epoxy actually changes the color of the thread more than the varnish I've been using, especially silk. More transparent. I am pretty comfortable with my TM Lite process but still have so far to go with varnish. I kinda like the smell but I'm only building a few rods a year.
