Hello everyone! After finding info on this site and lurking for a while, I thought I should share some pics of my first rod build. I like the look of "newer" class but did not have the money to spend on newer glass, especially since I had not fished glass before. I then began looking at older fiberglass rods. My search for a used rod was limited because I did not want metal ferrules. So I bought a vintage Cortland 502-1 7wt rod, and completely stripped it and rebuilt it with modern components that I got in a kit. After it was all said and done, I have around $45 in this rod. I have now fished this rod for around 10 months with streamers in warm water. and it has landed some decent sized fish and it has held up great. I am looking forward to building another rod this winter. Here are some before and after pictures.

That's the way to breath life into a great vintage glass blank. Did you sneak a few more guides in?

Thanks for the compliments! As for the guides, I used some of my other rods of similar length (redington predator 7'10" & ross flystik 7'11"), for the number of guides and spacing. Probably not the best method but this rod was more of an experiment for me.

A refinish like that is no easy task. Stripping the original rod of its components, thread, and finish is a chore. Prepping the stripped blank can be a pain too, but you handled it well. By the way, the before pictures show a well cared for, nifty looking Cortland ProCrest. I like mylar wraps! I don't know if I'd have had the inclination to re-do that particular rod -- it just looks so darn nice. No matter, you did a great job and should be happy with the result. I'm curious -- did you line it, and cast the rod before, and after the refinish? And if so, did you notice a difference? Does it prefer a 7 weight line, lighter, heavier, or same weight line? Thanks again for posting.

Thank you! The worst part of stripping the rod was getting the old reel seat off. I can't stand the mylar wraps! Haha. It was in nice shape, but I since these are not really collectors rods, I was fine stripping it and now I fish it pretty hard. Believe it or not, I did not cast the rod before the build, mainly because I was going to rebuild it regardless. I fish it with a 6wt line, as I prefer it a little faster than with a 7wt line, but it handles a 7wt line just fine.

As all have said, you did a great job first time around. I think you dramatically improved the appearance of the rod.
