What follows is my 3rd build. Sorry for the crappy photos, I wanted to take some outside, but we have been short on sunshine.

The reel seat is dyed buckeye burl from Ray Lee. My first sliding band reel seat ever. I was always worried about the reel coming lose, but it works great (you were right Marty).

Everything else is from Proof: Snake brand eco light wire guides, low profile stripping guide, Fish Hawk medium brown thread (no cp - I love how it gets a reddish hue on the Lami blank), TM lite epoxy, and 5.75" full wells grip.

Another first for me was modifying a the grip. It felt a bit big for my hand, so I turned my electric drill into a lathe and took it down to my liking, that was fun.

Still room for improvement. I checked those wraps numerous times before covering with epoxy and still I had some blank showing through in places - I swear I had no gaps. Any suggestions?

Also, I used an acrylic paint pen for the inscription, which got kinda wide for my tastes. Marty Romeo has given me some suggestions on using India ink.

When I coated the inscription with epoxy, it got a bit lumpy. I carefully sanded smooth and tried again, really going thin and spreading it out, and still it wound up kind of lumpy. Any suggestions on that?

Thanks so much to Matt from Proof and Marty from Deep Bend Rodworks for putting up with my questions and for everyone else on this forum. What a great resource and everyone is so helpful. Gaddis, I used the spacing you posted awhile ago.

Finally (sorry this got so long), the cork is already soiled, I got a few outings with this rod and love it! Dries, nymphs, and streamers, it is a great small/medium trout rod. Donny, you are right - it is a "goldilocks" rod!

Very nice! I really like the colors all the way around. And I too like medium brown--I'm tempted to use it on almost every rod. My favorite is PacBay nylon medium brown. It is a bit more difficult to manage fuzzies but it has a bit of luster to it, even with epoxy.

good job on that lami. the medium brown thread and colors of the wood spacer give it a nice warm tone. the 76-4 honey lami is a favorite of mine.

This happens to me, too. I recently finished a rod that I thought I'd wrapped very well, only to notice a gap in one of the trim bands (after varnishing, of course). I think the best answer is to gain proficiency at wrapping, but pending that I just have to focus better while working, with a more critical eye.

This is not just with wraps. I may check guide alignment two, three, or more times, but I'll have one that's a little off after all is done. In either case, I now finish with spar, so replacing a guide is easy.

The error may bother you, but it doesn't affect the rod's performance.

Good job! I really like how that looks. I'm thinking of getting one of those blanks.

Good job on that rod. As for "lumpiness" at the script area, I have found it is the result of applying too much finish at one time. Because it is a large area to cover compared to the guide wrap, you are inclined to increase the amount of finish. As for the script, I only use India ink and a fine nib.

Turned out great, Greg!

Pack those wraps tight, then burnish burnish burnish. Always tricky with dark thread on a lighter blank - just ask Orvis (ever hold one of their new SFGs?).

Happy to give some tips on signature finish - just holler.
