I’ve been working on this rod for several years and it’s been in planning for about 15 years. This is one of my Grandfather’s rods, and it needed a complete rebuild. It started life as a modest 8’6” Heddon Viscount for a HCH/GBF, painted white with orange wraps. Over time the ferrules didn’t work well, and a small rodent had taken off a good bit of the grip. I completely stripped the rod blank, added a second tip, re-ferruled the rod with some NOS Rodon Super Swiss ferules, and refinished the blank. I reproduced his favorite grip (EC Powell influence) and upgraded the reel seat. I added more snakes to an appropriate 11 guides. I wrapped the rod in a Gary Howells or Claudio style by overwrapping the ferrules, signature wrap style and tipping. Another member of this board sent me some NOS thread that I needed to make this happen.

The rod is pretty nice with DT7, Actually better than I thought it might be and surprisingly good with an 8wt bass taper. I plan to hopefully use it some this year with poppers for bass (his favorite style) and I will decide it I’m willing to fly it to MT/WY to fish on the Madison River next fall. His name was WP.

Pictures are not the best, but here goes.

Thanks for the comments. Thinking back he would have been 102 this year. He served in WW2, was over aircraft maintenance when we took Guam back. Was always practical, loved to hunt and fish. Practiced fishing like it was hunting, you stalked your target and topwater was always best. However, this rod also saw a level line with a live grasshopper when the focus was on putting food on the table.

Thanks for sharing this, I could picture the look on your grandfathers face if he saw this rod again.

Catch a big one!

It was asked on the build influences and I had time to snap a couple of additional photos to show the double wrapping of the ferrule and blank junction, and the signature wraps that are based on a Gary Howells Bamboo rod. Winston used the same techniques.

I wish I had an old rod from my grandfather. Your after shots are nice. Do you have any before shots? Those white blanks may have looked stylish in their day, probably to look like a Shakespeare, but those painted white Viscount blanks were homely. I love what you brought out in the rod. Fly rods should be brown, dammit!
